The government provided funds to negotiate treaties that would force the Native Americans to move west. Many of the tribes signed removal treaties. However, the Cherokee refused and fought the government in court. The Supreme Court ruled that the state of Georgia could not regulate the Cherokee by law or invade their lands. Jackson refused to abide by the Supreme Court decision  and in the years following he had the US troops round up the Cherokee and drive them into camps to await the journey west. Winfield Scott’s address to the Cherokee Nation was important because General Scott lied to the people. Scott said “All those troops, regular and militia, are your friends. Receive them and confide in them as such”, and by saying this he was lying because the troops and militia were cruel to the people and treated them very poorly.
