Little Rock Nine was the group of nine African American students who integrated into the all-white school known as Central High School in 1957. Such students were selected for this very special assignment due to their academic acumen and readiness to challenge the status quo in integration.

The Willowbrook State School was constructed as a place to house and educate individuals with developmental disabilities. Students before the actual building of this school were classified as either "educable" if the student had "mild mental retardation" and "trainable" if their disabilities were far worse. Training in self-help skills and socialization would occur rather than an actual education. The construction of this school did indeed help many students with their education.

How they Connect

The Little Rock Nine and Willowbrook State School are very important topics that have changed the educational system today. These two topics connect because they were both "different" students joining a school for the education they needed and equality. The disabled students learned education just like any other students would, and the Little Rock Nine students were African Americans joining an all-white school to learn the same things that any other student would. These topics connect because both sets of students wanted a true education and equality for everyone.

They are occupied, in schools today, with all children, no matter what race they are, and no matter how intellectually intelligent they are. All students can gather inclusive education, some with a little extra help, but are all able and allowed into public schools today. Without Willowbrook State School and Little Rock Nine these changes may have never been made and we would live in a segregated community.

Although at the beginning, Willowbrook State School for students with disabilities sounded like a great idea, at the end of its time, many people were suspicious of their medical practices and experiments. It closed down in 1987 led to the ability of disabled students to become apart of an all-public school.

Little Rock Nine impacted and inspired desegregation, it strengthened the Civil Rights Movement and the fight for equality. This also impacted and inspired the next generation and captured the president's attention. This ended violent protests about segregation and all-around allowed African American students to enroll in previously all-white schools.
