The reason why the boy wanted to help the burned man was because he didn’t like the fact of leaving someone that needed help behind. His empathy took over him. However in the book it states how the man said no we need to keep going. He then explained later to his son that it is because they couldn’t help him because they had no resources to give him the help. That is why they had to leave the burned man.

Emma Escobar

When the man says "you forget what you want to remember and remember what you want to forget" he talks about the experience that most people remember. It's difficult to remember the happier moments in comparison to the bad ones. I cannot remember anything from my childhood except the bad. I only really remember embarrassing or upsetting memories but cannot for the life of me remember the happy.

He explained to his son that without him, he would have nothing and take his own life. This explains that why he doesn't care much about his own health, even though he is coughing blood. Making sure his son is warm and fead even on a crappy bridge place.

10. The significance to “That the boy was all that stood between him and death” is how the boy is the only reason for the man to continue having the will to survive. For example, when the man’s wife wanted to kill herself, she wanted her son to die with her. But, the man explained that he would live for his son. Life in a apocalyptic world is no way to live. But, he wants to make sure that his son has a chance to experience living, even if it isn’t perfect.

The man is mainly concerned with keep his son safe. He is has a very strong connection with him and if he were to die he probably would kill himself. Also, he needs to find food and shelter to help surive. Due to the fact they are suffering from an apocalyspe, finding any resources is useful to them. His main concern though is taking care of his son.

“That the boy was all that stood between him and death?” (22) What does this mean?
This sentence infers that the boy is whats stopping the man from death which means he is also what stops the man from killing himself. The main reason the man is alive and fighting every day is because of the boy. He wants to keep him alive as long as he can and not give up. That comes from the fact that the mother had killed herself and wanted to kill her son as well so he did not have to suffer. Tho the man wanted to try for his son to have a life.

When the man asks the boy, “Can you do it? When the time comes? Can you?”, I believe he is referring to possibly death because the man knows it is most likely going to happen sooner than later. When the time comes, the man wants to make sure the boy will be able to handle the situation. The world is so bad that the boy will suffer if he doesn’t take action when the time comes.
-Anna

The wallet had a picture of his wife (who committed suicide) inside of it. It represented his past and the fact that he has not forgotten his wife and the purpose that his son and himself have. At the end, he threw away his wallet and kept the picture of his wife.

How was the sense of constant danger communicated to the reader, I think it’s communicated through the dialogue the most. ” the man fell back instantly and lay there blood bubbling from the hole in his head. I think this helps create a picture in the readers head and really shows what happened. The quote uses words that we are familiar with to show what the author means. The dialogue and the way the situations were portrayed make up for the punctuation that is nonexistent.

The apocalypse happed and then the wife killed herslef because she wants to be able to choose when she dies and wanted to take her child with her. This supports my answer because the wife doesn’t want her loved ones to die a tragic death because it not worth it.

Jaena A: What do they do at the waterfall? Do you think this is a wise or foolish act? Why?

Once they found the waterfall, the man and his son washes themselves and finds mushrooms to eat. This quote supports this: "He turned and swam out to the falls and let the water beat upon him. The boy was standing in the pool to his waist... [The man] held him and floated him about, the boy gasping and chopping at the water... A small colony of them, shrunken, dried and wrinkled... He bit a piece from the edge and chewed." This quote portays what they do once they have reached the waterfall. Stopping here was practical since it allowed them to take care of their basic needs. Overall, this act of finding food and taking care of their hygiene can be seen as wise, as it helps to ensure the man and his son's survival and well-being.
