This sentence infers that the boy is whats stopping the man from death which means he is also what stops the man from killing himself. The main reason the man is alive and fighting every day is because of the boy. He wants to keep him alive as long as he can and not give up. That comes from the fact that the mother had killed herself and wanted to kill her son as well so he did not have to suffer. This quote portays what they do once they have reached the waterfall. Stopping here was practical since it allowed them to take care of their basic needs.
