Mrs. Jensen is an ENL-certified 8th grade math teacher. Her third-period class contains 28 students, with 8 of them are English language learner. Of which, two of them are in the transitioning level, while the other six are entering and emerging. Mrs. Jensen is having difficulty getting the six lower-level ELLs to understand the current lesson, which is about linear equations. What effective approach can Mrs. Jensen adopt to unfold the learning segment for the students, given the learners' limited English?

When I hear the term "best practice" in education, I think about all the strategies that teachers have discovered and utilize over the years to support student engagement, learning, and classroom management. Like what we discussed previous about consistent consequences, there isn't a set formula for how to tackle certain situations but it based upon the students you have a classroom.

I consider making every chance I get in a classroom a teachable moment and building rapport with my students to be part of "best practices". The relationship we build with our students are an essential part of learning. It is also just as important to utilize the students funds of knowledge when teaching so that they can see the connections and purpose for learning what we teach them.

An effective approach Mrs. Jensen can adopt to scaffold student learning is the use of flippables. It is similar to providing students with sentence strips but instead, it breaks down the formulas used for linear equations. They would be able to flip through it and see what each symbol means and how they should approach the problem. Students would not be overwhelmed with the vertical examples Mrs. Jensen may teach the whole class. Mrs. Jensen explains everything verbally and does not write down instructions for each step so the flippable would really help.

When I hear "best practice" I think traditional pedagogies or techniques that have worked for most students and teachers continue to use them for all the students.
I think best practice in a classroom includes adapting the speed and ways of teaching lessons based on how the class responds. It should include being culturally responsive and as Annie mentions, to build rapport and show the students the lesson in authentic contexts.

Mrs. Jensen can go over mathematical vocabulary, such as having students read the word, write the symbol, and determine the relationship in the problem, which is helpful for all students. She can also put linear equations in a context that is familiar to the ELLs' everyday life and use visual models, such as drawing the graphs to show the solution step by step. Mrs. Jensen can scaffold by providing sentence frames on the board for ELLs to see how to use the vocabulary.

Mrs. Jensen can first go over important math terms with these students by creating flashcards. This type of scaffolding will be helpful for ELLs in understanding word meanings when they see these related math terms in their linear equation questions. If possible, translations can also be made for such math terms. In addition, since this involves graphing, sitting with these students in a group and modeling for them how to plot points can be helpful in showing them step by step, what must be done.

Mrs. Jensen could review the most important vocabulary words in the student’s native language as a language support. In addition, she could break down the steps in solving linear equations using visuals. Students could create a Frayer model of how to solve linear equations by having the definition, translation, visual examples and non-examples so students could use as a reference when solving new problems.
