I believe students learn best (especially in history) by connecting their learning to acting as the discoverers of knowledge and the creators of meaning. When students view history as something they are interpreting, rather than something that is already decided and known before they entered the room, they will feel engaged in the activities. Activities to engage this should focus less on lecture and far more on group projects reading, interpreting, and arguing about documents and historical narratives.
