He received a contract with Sony Music Italy and was automatically selected for the prestigious Sanremo Music Festival. 

His debut EP after winning, Dove Si Vola, peaked at number 9 on the Italian Albums Chart. Mengoni's second EP, Re Matto, which was released in 2010, held the number one album spot for four consecutive weeks.

In 2013, Mengoni won the Sanremo Festival with the song "L'essentiale", automatically qualifying him for Italy's slot in Eurovision 2013, ultimately placing 7th out of 26.

His second studio album #prontoacorrere debuted at number 1 in the Italian Albums Chart.
