In this work the memory of the people who died for their country is being represented. As well as people who managed to survive in harmony. The ties that still exist between these islands are represented by a thread which connects them. Finally we believe that it is important to be aware of what this war caused and the consequences it had in order not to repeat the same mistakes.

It represents the interest conflict of two nations on cost of innocent people. Its purpose is to show how nationalism and non democratic governments can lead to military conflicts. Even tough it’s a past issue it’s important to address it as history often repeats. The representation of the heads being bigger than the corpses shows how to the eyes of these leaders, their army are just a casualty and doesn’t really affect them

We can see 4 different perspectives; starting with the perpetrators, they are being represented with the people who are selling drugs; then we have the activist who are inside the jail, this because against the perpetrators power, they had no chance of succeeding; then the victims will be the dead bodies laying on the ground, due to the fact that the cartel killed them so they have no witnesses; finally there’s the witnesses which are hiding and watching everything far away so the don’t get killed like the victims.
We hope this creates continence about the drug conflict in Colombia and why is such a difficult and dangerous problem to try to solve.

Paola Gil, Santiago Hernandez, Naomi Hirata, Regina Padilla, Estefania Martinez.

Sculpture

This sculpture illustrates the resolution of the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, a conflict that nearly ended life as we know it and almost doomed humanity to Mutually Assured Destruction. This moment in history is better known as the closest mankind ever got to a Nuclear armageddon.

It seeks to represent the two world leaders’ hands that had millions of lives depending on that one handshake. We did not paint or try to differentiate the third figure among the two parts because this sculpture could be used as an example of any other conflict that happened in the 20th century. This is why our artistic work is relevant up to this day, because in every single dispute, there will always be thousands of lives depending on what a few decide. We wanted a clear message to come through “At the end, and in our simplest form, we are humans living on the same planet”.

Allan Reed López, Ana Isabel Meléndez, Luis Alberto Aranda, Jose Emilio Contreras, Ángel Eduardo Espinosa

The Button Game and Those Who Wanna Play It

2023

Model

Through the styling characteristics applied to the work we are able to describe the feelings that were transmitted by the big leaders during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Each one is climbing the world (a half terrestrial globe that represents the geographical space of the period) to get their hands over the buttons of mass destruction. Cuba can be found in the middle of this race. There are missiles over each side of the terrestrial globe, pointing directly to the other side, recreating the nuclear tension between these two nations that surrounded the world with their fights and their necessities. Each piece of artwork from the memorial represents the different perspectives that were applied during the Cuban Missile Crisis. From the leaders climbing to see who reaches first the nuclear bombs buttons, or Cuba being in the middle representing where it all happens and the justification for it. But at the same time, how the world is divided in half; two ideologies that define it and control it, over reaching for all and to all. The suits of the two leaders reflect the diplomacy that pretended to disguise the fragility of this time period and how vulnerable humans can be.
Learning about the Cuban Missile Crisis it's not just learning about a semi-diplomatic war, its to understand the fragility of contemporary politics, how each ideology can overturn and make each country change from the roots to the branches of its influences. The importance of critical thinking, of analyzing our leaders, understanding the one who’s next to us, and over all, looking out for the sake of humanity and the world itself.

The message it gives is that even when we are injured we can start all over again and how a nuclear war would have harmed humanity forever, changing everything we’ve ever known into a tragic radioactive reality. It is important for people to be aware of the past events that almost killed humanity because if we do not know our history we are doomed to repeat it again. As this model is directed to prepa tec students, we consider it relevant for us to know that humans are able to build something destructive that can be destroyed by something as fragile as communication. In conclusion, it is important to create our own history, our own path, without forgetting where we came from, what ideas create us and lead us to what we now know, so we can avoid repeating the horrible past events and develop as a new conscious society.

None of the pieces are recognizable or even have faces, this further tends to depict how, during the Cold War, Cuba and its people were not seen as humans, but just as part of their “game plan”. On each side of the board, we can see the communist side (in white), and the capitalist side (in black). Each of the hands, representing both sides of the Cold War, controls the kings of each side: the USSR controls the representation of Fidel Castro. In contrast, the USA controls the representation of Fulgencio Batista.
