Many Africans were brought to the United States from Africa. They were then forced to do manual labor work in the United States and given little to no rights. Then the Missouri Compromise came into play which admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. and having the 36 30 line to split free states from slave states. Then later on Washington D.C would ban the slave trade, but this issue over slavery would be the main role the growing Sectionalism tensions would occur.

After the United States had won the war against Mexico there was a treaty where Mexico had to give up a majority of the southwest region to the United States. This meant more land to expand to. Which meant the debate over slavery being in those lands and the increase of sectional tensions coming with that.

The Compromise of 1850 was made of of five bills which tried to solve the issues of slavery in the newly acquired areas. It was made by Henry Clay and Stephan Douglas. And made it so it balanced out the southern interest with the Northern Interests as well. The Fugitive Slave act was also passed making it so southern slave owners could recover runaway slaves. This was made as a presence to California joining the union as free state to balance things out.

The Republican Party emerged based on the split on political parties like the Whigs. This party would be opposed the expansion of slavery in the United States. Or have Abolitionist that wanted to get rid of slavery all together. This then opposed the beliefs of the Democrats which were pro slavery and wanted it to expand.
Kansas-Nebraska Act (Bleeding Kansas) 1854

The Kansas-Nebraska Act was proposed by Stephen Douglas in order to clear the Nebraska territory of Native Americans, and be able to build a rail road from the West coast to Chicago. It proposed that the territory of Nebraska would be split into two, Nebraska and Kansas who would each be able to decided whether they would become a "slave" or "free" state through "popular sovereignty." The Missouri Compromise was then completely repealed and it was passed in 1854 with the support of President Pierce. "Bleeding Kansas" was a term used to describe the physical battles between towns in Kansas while they were voting on becoming a "free" or "slave" state. This would cause sectionalism because the right to popular sovereignty would make people battle each other with their beliefs to try and win to either become a "free" or "slave" state further dividing the population moving westward.

John Brown Raid (1859)

John Brown was an antislavery zealot who led his followers fort in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. By capturing the fort he hoped that it would begin to create panic in the South and slave revolts would begin to occur as well as more Northerners would join him in the fights against slavery. He was ultimately capture and hanged, but this was where we saw that the only way to solve the huge problem of slavery, we were going to have to use violence. This would create sectional tension as Southerners saw how far Northerners were willing to go just to try and fight slavery, and would make the split bigger through the panic it caused.

Election of Nov 6, 1860

The election of 1860 was very important as slavery had reached its peak. The election had brought forth four candidates, Abraham Lincoln of the Republican party, John Breckenridge and Stephen Douglas from the Democratic party, as well as John Bell from the newly formed Constitutional Union Party. The Democratic party was split between two candidates which meant that they ultimately lost the election because they could not get a majority vote on a single candidate. Abraham Lincoln would then end up winning the election with a majority electoral vote coming from all Northern states, even though he only had a 2/5 majority vote. This election would be the final straw leading up to the Civil War as the Southern states saw that they would not be winning any more in Congress because of the Republican President and caused them to secede from the nation leading up to the start of the war.

This is considered the start of the Civil War as Edmund Ruffin shot the first shot of the War in the early hour of April 12, 1861. This would lead to surrounding troops to also fire on Fort Sumter and for Fort Sumter to fire back. This would become the biggest cause for the war as the South basically declared war while they were firing on Fort Sumter.
