My Reflections

I chose this article based upon my up bringing in a rural area with limited resources however my guidance counselor at the time helped me and other classmates to see a world beyond our small town.

Assessment Overview

In my findings of the ASCA School Counselor Assessment is that it is a guide to keep you within ethical standards as a School Counselor. I found it helpful with to take the assessment to help me be more competent in my knowledge as a school counselor. The assessment helped me to define my goals as a counselor in a clear manner. My mindset is knowing my position as a School Counselor being part of community leadership. My goal is to use this assessment to continue growing and understanding the ethical and unethical practices in becoming a school counselor. I also feel it a tool to help you stay current on counseling requirements. I recognize I aim for more community leadership and being direct with students while understanding environmental factors. I do believe every student has an opportunity to succeed giving the proper tools to succeed with family, school, and community support.

Areas of Improvement

As a School Counselor one area of improvement that is vital to my success is continuous professional development. I believe staying current and updated is essential. I will have expectation on myself to attend classes, workshops, conferences, or online classes to give students the best opportunity to use the resources they will have with in me. I can gain more strength in cultural competence and understanding cultural difference. To strengthen that area as I learn more diversity among students’ culture, it can be used as a collaboration and produce teamwork. I also feel my strengths in staying current with technology in digital age will give more indirect access to student and their families. Using a digital platform will give more opportunity for communication, coordinating services needed for student and their families as well as more community involvement.

Reflections

My lesson is centered on positive mindsets. As a school counselor working with high school students, it's important to be a support and an advocate for positive social outcomes. High school years are crucial years for young adulthood and how students respond to challenges they face. Student can gain understanding of self-improvement by learning how to be positive in all social settings.
