It shows how social media has such an impact on "the emerging consumer base". Generation Z avoids having ads on their phones so retailers have found a new way to market via social media. It reveals that social media will become the new way to market with all retailers if they want to keep up with the growing consumer base. Social media serves as a new platform for advertisement and product marketing. As social media has become more prominent its influence has increased.

That even though it facilitates communication it lacks on connection and often leaves one feeling lonely and isolated. Jacob Amedie speaks of three main negative effects of social media to eventually conclude that it is bad. He does acknowledge that social media has good aspects and can be a great platform for giving a voice to victims in tragedies, as well as, spreading news quicker in some instances. Although he talks about how the use of social media can cause "Facebook depression" it also mentions a correlation with social media usage and a higher risk for anxiety and depression. This is caused by the constant release of the stress hormone cortisol, this is released from constantly trying to project perfectionism, constantly being alert for messages, and the sense of false intimacy.

Whether that be for news, brand or retailer information. Brands have begun to utilize social media as not only a marketing platform but also as a platform for incentives among consumers. Social media has become a collaborative and interactive medium that has been able to foster better consumer retailer relationships. Dependence on social media for information coincides with company engagement. Those that are more dependent on social media and engage with retailers on social media often engage more with companies and promote peer communication about companies. Social media dependency positively influences public-organization's media engagement.

That the teens have such an influence on a large portion of the markets spending. Generation Z already has such a large buying power without even accounting for the influence in purchases on their household. This source is important because it shows just how much purchasing power the youth have. Then the fact that they are so dependent on social media shows the influence that social media and the marketing there could have on the market. If brands can figure out how to directly market to this generation and the youth, who are so invested in social media, they will be able to control the media and the market.

Social media and technology facilitate communication between people whether that be friends or strangers. However, electronic relationships can often foster feelings of isolation. Emotion is so poorly transmitted and perceived online as opposed to in person. This makes confrontation that much easier online because one does not register the negative effect of their actions since they do not necessarily have to face it in person. Requests and questions posted through social media or an online platform are much easier to avoid than in person interactions of the same caliber. Social media allows one to avoid responsibilities easier. It can be a great tool for communication but when one relies too heavily on the relationships online than those in person it can become very isolating.

How Not to Be Alone

Foer, Jonathan Safran. “Opinion | How Not to Be Alone.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 8 June 2013, www.nytimes.com/2013/06/09/opinion/sunday/how-not-to-be-alone.html.
The author looks into how technology has made it easier to retreat from personal connection. How online communication were not created to be improvements of in person communication but rather a substitute for it. These substitutes began to popularize because they lack the commitment to emotion that in person communication has. Each substitute for face-to-face communication offers a retreat from emotional responsibility and the work of being present. These substitutes are able to convey information but not humanity unlike in person connection. These so called diminished substitutes cause humans to become diminished as they do not say as much and therefore do not feel as much. Technology is used as a means to save time but in turn it makes this saved time less intimate. This source is important because it is intimate and asks the real questions and brings up the valid points of how technology is really creating a sense of false intimacy and letting many disregard their emotional responsibility of being present.

Social Media: Usage and Impact

Al-Deen, Hana S. Noor. Social Media: Usage and Impact. Lexington Books, 2013.
In this book the author delves into different impacts that social media has on the world. She mentions companies and advertising through social media and that these can enhance consumer relations. Companies provide a networking platform through social media allowing them to be able to support customers, as well as, provide information, promotions, and exclusivity. It reveals how social media can be a platform for constant influx of knowledge and a way to connect people. Social media has created a demand for two-way communication platforms that engage and evolve based on the conversation. It allows those that are alike; in thought, action, interests, and any other common interest, to be grouped together. In having the ability to do this it gives voice to many groups that would often not be really heard from. However, a downside to this is that it creates a "group think" similar environment that can detract from original ideas and creativity.

I think this is important because young teens will have been really the first group of people to grow up with so many different social medias and the ease of access at their fingertips. The vast majority state that social media makes them feel as if they are more connected in their friends lives and make them feel as if they are supported. They also associate social media with inclusion and exposure to diversity while a far smaller percentage equate it with exclusion and overwhelming pressure to conform. There is a pressure to post only the highlights and not discuss personal problems which can lead to feelings of isolation and a false sense of a positive reality or the disregard of emotional trauma or personal problems. This disregard of personal problems can mold a person into ignoring problems for the better part of their life and thus creating more issues.

At the beginning there is a chart listing the positives and negatives of digital life. It goes into anecdotes of digital life and whether these had a positive or negative effect on the person. It finishes off with responses that are evenly split between negative and positive. This source is awesome because it gives real life accounts of the effects that social media and digital life in general have on people. It is a trusted research institute that preformed this study which helps the credibility of the source. I like how it included the chart at the beginning for easy reference to the effects that were talked about in the next pages of the study. Some positives were connectedness, the ability to invent, reinvent, and innovate, as well as access to life saving advice. While some of the negatives listed were connectedness overload, trust tensions, and personal identity issues. This source like most of my others touches on the false persona that someone can portray online. Which I think is a huge issue and have seen happen firsthand
