In 1821 there were about 4,000 Tejanos living in Texas. But the Spanish officials wanted more settlers to come to texas so when Moses Austin asked to start a colony Spain agreed to let them. Shortly after when Moses Austin came to texas, Mexico gained independence from the spanish and Texas was now theirs. Austin went to mexico to ask if they could keep the colony and Mexico said only if they become citizens and go to the Roman Catholic Church. Through 1821-1827 many americans came to Texas because they the land was rich and It had forests. In the east they had, rich soil for growing corn and cotton, and great grassy plains for grazing animals. It also had rivers leading to natural ports on the Gulf of Mexico. The tejanos did not like the americans because the tejanos thought that americans were more superior then them and were unwilling to follow the laws of mexico. The tensions between the Tejanos and americans later on led to the Battle of Alamo which was a violent battle where mexico killed all the male alamo defenders and left a few women and children to survive and mexico thought this would discourage rebellions. After the battle they rebelled again and fought back and won at San Jacinto. After they won Texas became independent and became their own nation. The significance of this was that Texas became their own state for 10 years but later will become a part of the united states.
