Alliteration: Repeated consonant sounds at the beginning of words placed near each other, usually on the same or adjacent lines.

"till tides of turning time may toss" This is an alliteration because there is five words that start with t in this line.

This device makes the speaker seem more snappy at this point. I think it may also emphasize that the tides will turn and the speaker will be the one laughing.

Metaphor: A direct comparison between two unlike things, stating that one is the other or does the action
of the other.

An example of a metaphor in this poem is how the speaker compares finding a significant other to fishing and the ocean.

This metaphor sets the setting through many other similar analogies with the speaker also talking about sand, tides, fishermen, fish, and seas. Instead of blatantly stating that my mistress cheated on me and I will let her go, then someone will cheat on her and I will laugh at her, the speaker changes the subject from a human to a fish. A popular saying that connects with this is "there are plenty of fish in the sea" This saying is also connecting significant others to fish.

Rhyme Scheme: The pattern established by the arrangement of rhymes in a stanza or poem, generally described by using letters of the alphabet to denote the recurrence of rhyming lines, such as the
ababbcc of the Rhyme Royal stanza form.

The rhyme scheme in this poem is abab. the "a" line ends in a word that rhymes with the last word in the other "a" line. this also happens with "b" too.

This device gives the poem a sense of flow. It shows that each line should be read at a certain pace that makes the lines still rhyme with each other. This also helps make the poem catchy and easier to read.

He is saying that there is a fish for every man. The fish are symbolizing a significant other. He is saying why would you get more than one fish.

His mistress took more than one fish. This means that the mistress cheated on him because she had two fish, the speaker and someone else.

The fishermen symbolize the speaker and people looking for someone. The speaker says he would want all the seas to be his only to fish. Everyone wants to be alone when choosing their significant other so there is no competition.

He says that what happened has happened and he is fine with leaving her. He is okay with taking the loss, and his mistress can take the other person that she cheated on with.

He says that he is fine with taking a loss and soon the tides will turn and he will find someone good for him.

people are laughing at him because he can't find his soulmate, but once they get cheated on he will laugh at them.

The point of view of this poem is first person. I know this because it has words such as I, you, and my in it.

The speaker goes through a few different emotions through the poem. I think it starts off angry. The speaker starts off talking to himself in third person asking himself if he is mad. This anger turns into sadness as he accepts what has happened and it finishes with him trying to find happiness when others go through what he has.
