For example, average prize money is now the same as per the FIVB (International Volleyball Federation) guidelines and the more popular players in the sport are paid more (in this case, women, which is rare for sport). In 2010, the FIVB awarded 10% more prize money to the men’s beach volleyball team than the women’s team, but now this has been fixed and prize money is the same across all genders. However, regular volleyball still has a massive difference between male and female prize money. In the men’s world championships, first prize is worth USD $1,000,000. However, first place in the women’s world championships is only USD $210,000. Even third place in the men’s championship is worth more than first place in the women’s. Due to this, volleyball is often seen as a sport played by women, and one that isn't taken seriously because of this focus on women's bodies. To compare, men's volleyball has a less sexualized image in the public's eye due to the uniforms that are much more casual and loose-fitting.
