Hi all,
Lets discuss this topic, actually I agree with Chomsky Theory which states that children are born with the ability to recognize the sounds and features of language. Its because their innate ability to acquire language or because of the grammar gene.

In addition, Chomsky believes that acquiring language is a process of internalization a set of language rules so that the children can produce entirely a sentence. I also believes in Chomsky theory which states that each children have their language faculty or Universal Grammar for their language acquisition. Either the first or up to the last language that they could acquire.

In addition, one thing that we must remember that grammar gene or UG happens in the children critical period (between 2 to 5 years old) which means the input will be very effective and affects great impact for the output. However, if the children have already passed the critical period their innate ability to acquire language is not fully completed like when they are still in the crirtical period.

I think it is true that children have a unique ability in learning language and that this unique ability is somehow reduced significantly or greatly diminished when they reached puberty. When we realized that the children's parents are usually not language teachers and they probably did not provide proper inputs for the children to acquire language it is hard to deny the fact that children really do have this amazing ability. However, I have to say that the actual existence of Universal Grammar/Grammar Gene/Innate Acquisition Device is still vague. The actual existence of such a module/device still needs to be proven. Therefore, I agree with Chomsky's theory about children first language acquisition with a note that. But I also believe that cognitivists have opinions that are relevant. One of them is the believe that knowledge of language arise from language use.

Do I believe that children have a unique ability in acquiring language? Yes. Do I believe that this ability is the result of a specific module/device? I have neither the arguments to deny or support. It is probably because we are only beginning to understand how our brain works. If in the future there are arguments that support the fact that our brain consist of different modules and one of the modules turns out to be the device Chomsky was referring to than this will be the proof Chomsky was entirely correct. But until then I will accept Chomsky's theory in the notion that no other theory explain children's language acquisition better.

So for this second discussion, we are all almost agree with the Chomsky's view about how children come to acquire their native language. We believe that grammar gene/UG is exist in children. They have innate ability to acquire language efficiently.
