  •  The music was usually very simple with not that many syncopated rhythms in accompaniment or lyrics.
  •  The lyrics were always simple with topics of love, girls, or having a good time. The writers were careful with the lyrics to not offend any class of people and to also appeal the the teenager audience.
  •  The music sounded very machine-like, and very precise and perfect. This was because of the producers and brill building writers being the new boss of the music industry. 
  •  The notes the singers had to sing were not difficult. Since the teen idols were usually picked because of their appearance and teen age, the idols usually have very little singing skill. 
  • Most of the music from teen idols sounded the same because of the Brill Building business practice.

  •  One of the influences of the teen idol/bubblegum era was the growing youth market created from the rise of Rock and Roll in the 1950s. After “the day music died”: with the plane crash in ‘59 killing 3 major rock artists, Elvis going into the military, and Little RIchard going into ministry the big “Tin Pan” companies stole the R+R youth market easily since there was no R+R anymore. 
  • Another major influence was the images created by major artists in the 1950s like Pat Boone and Elvis Presley. Each had a distinct image of either a “good boy” image, a clean-cut man that parents accepted and allowed their children to buy their music, or a “bad boy” image, a rugged “sex obsessed hoodlum” (What’s That Sound?, pg 115) who parents did not accept and tried to keep their kids away from their music. With these images realized, the big companies realized what type of artist can make them the most profits, hence the creation of the teen idol.

  • Brill Building
    • With the transition after the “day that music died”, the big companies gained control over the music industry and its consumers. The big companies turned everything about music being freedom to being manufactured machine-like. 
    • In this building, many songwriters and studio musicians are housed in cubicles and are required to have a song prepared at any time needed. 
      • A lot of the songs sounded the same because the cubicles were not soundproof, so the pianos, instrument, singing and etc can be heard through all the walls of the building.
    • The singers of the songs had very little to no input in the songs they sang. 
    • This practice took out the fun in music, it made music into a strict business. 
  • The music during this era of Bubblegum/teen idols was created only to make profit
    • Hence the Brill Building practices. These practices of creating music was the most efficient way for them to finish songs fast enough to make quick profits out of them. 
  • Producers 
    • Before the pop era, R+R artists had a strong appearance in the recording process of their songs. 
      • Now into the pop era, many of the songs are written and recorded by professionals. These professionals soon turned into producers.
    • They shaped, reformed, and built up a specific sound for each song their worked on. They had the final say in each piece if it was ready for the public or not.

  • The teen idol/Bubblegum era of music is significant to music’s history because it was the music that prospered in the sights of Rock n Roll’s demise. 
    • This is the time that followed the music era of freedom and rebellion against the social normalities of America.
      • It showed how the big companies saw Rock n Roll and how they did not respect it and just wanted to make money off of a horrible, not even close to comparision of rock n roll (Bubblegum).
