As the Veterans Grant Coordinator for the county of Williamson, Texas, I administer the Texas Veterans Commission General Assistance Grant. The readers of the guide will be employees, local agencies, veterans and their families. I selected this guide topic because legal and ethical compliance for my grant recipients is important and is closely related to my job, which involves the disbursement of emergency financial assistance. Compliance with legal requirements and ethical responsibilities protects me and the organization by ensuring that we handle this money with integrity, accountability and attention to due process, so that veterans are not delayed or unduly burdened when accessing this service.

An increased understanding of the legal and ethical obligations of serving in my capacity can and will influence the way in which I work in connection with veteran assistance programs. It will prompt me to be more cautious in order to be sure I understand my responsibilities to comply with these rules. I do not want to betray the trust veterans have placed in me by either being ineffective in providing assistance or doing things I am not allowed to do. In addition, on a personal level, this understanding will ensure that I feel good about what I am doing to benefit the lives of veterans in an honest manner. This aspect is particularly in line with my education and career goals.
