My current school district has a technology coordinator who sends out weekly tech tips. These tips provide new technology and tools we can use in our classroom. Technology is used in the classroom to supplement instructional content. For example, Edmentum is an online game that is based on students' Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) scores. Every morning students use Edmentum to start the day with differentiated content to promote growth in specific areas.

In the classroom, I encourage and motivate students to work hard and respect each other and themselves. There is a clip chart with different levels. Each student starts the ready-to-learn position. Then throughout the day, they can clip up or down. Each position has a reward or consequence. The expectations are clearly stated so each student knows the expectations of classroom behavior. I prioritize talking with my students so I can build trust and earn their respect. I model kindness often to promote this trait within each student. When I ask them to do something I say “please” and “thank you”. When I show students respect they have a model to practice respect and kindness. I show my students each day I care by setting clear expectations and classroom goals. This practice promotes a positive classroom environment which stimulates learning.

To connect with families initially I call each parent or guardian the first week of school to check in and have a positive conversation about the students. The first phone call home should not be for poor decisions but to establish a positive relationship with parents. Class Dojo is a communication tool that allows messaging and announcement feed. Class Dojo also has a point system that can be used for classroom management. I use the points for my Dojo store to promote positive decision-making and accountability. The points are labeled and parents are notified if students earn or lose a point.

Two of my students qualify for response to intervention for reading and literacy. Currently, my school only pulls students who are in the bottom ten percent. Although the majority of my class would benefit from additional reading and literacy intervention. To accommodate the students who need extra help I collaborate with the reading interventionist for small and whole-group strategies to support my students.

An Evidence-Based Instruction Practice that my students benefit from our Think-Pair-Share activity. My students enjoy moving around after a lesson and collaborating with a random friend. For example, our class is discussing the elements of folk tales. The students listen to the story, think about the different elements, pair up and share. For partners, I pull sticks or allow students thirty seconds to pick a partner. This activity promotes an engaging and exciting learning environment by moving around the room and sharing ideas.

Assessments are used as formative trackers or summative data for submitting grades. Our district uses standard-based assessments to measure student growth using the markers: progressing, met, or not met. The majority of formative assessments are given in small groups and summative assessments are administered in whole groups. Assessments are entered in our grade book system, Mastery Connect. Mastery Connect is a tool used to assist educators in organizing assessments as well as determining if students have mastered a skill. Assessments can be created or entered as raw scores to generate a student marker for progressing, met, or not met.

Teacher knowledge is critical for creating, differentiating, and presenting instructional content. Our district has a new curriculum that took time to navigate and present to students. Savvas is the curriculum used this year which outlines various parts of South Carolina English Language Arts standards. When preparing for a lesson I divide the provided lesson plan into three parts based on the suggested lesson plan. The three parts of my lesson plan are whole group, small group, and writing. Within each group, Savvas will provide workbook activities and tools to teach the lesson. For example, one week is centered around folktales, diagraphs, and writing a folktale. Based on the lesson provided I split each topic into whole or small groups and then pull different activities for the groups. If I did not take the time to study the topics and arrange the lesson plan I would not have the knowledge to present content to the students.
