Work in a small group of three persons - 9 groups of 3 persons and 2 pairs. Based on your reading of "Three ways the internet and social media changed the way we use language" each of you choose ONE different digital platform e.g., social media, blogs, online forums, or messaging apps. Study a post/thread and find evidence of the three ways as stated in the reading. Then, as a team summarise what you have found using ONE best media. Click anywhere and share your findings. Provide the evidence using links, images, videos, graphics etc.

We have found the the best media platform is social media. this is because it emphasises the use of hashtags, emojis and abbreviation, acronym and initialism the most.

The post is mainly related to students. that is why the hashtags come into play. for example #medschool (medical school). This hashtag correlate to abbreviation which is appealing especially to medical students.

The crying emoji represents the struggles of studying after eating.

This tweet exemplifies the three key ways social media language has evolved:

• Abbreviations: The use of “OP” (Original Post) is a common abbreviation, serving to credit the original poster or person who started the thread. It helps maintain clarity and structure in multi-thread conversations, allowing users to quickly reference the initial source.

• Emojis: The emoji 🙏🏼 (commonly interpreted as “please” or a gesture of prayer) is used here to express a request for assistance. In this context, it conveys the user’s plea for help in gathering information about who feeds Kopi. The emoji adds emotional depth to the post, making it more expressive than words alone.

• Hashtags: The hashtag #Justice4kopi helps categorize the post, making it easier for people interested in this topic to find and engage with it. Hashtags like this create a broader conversation around specific issues, boosting the post’s reach and visibility by linking it to a community of like-minded users.

Based on this TikTok video, we have identified three key ways social media has influenced language use:

Firstly, acronyms like "GOAT" (Greatest of All Time) have become popular. In the video, the creator uses "GOAT" to emphasize that their board game collection is exceptional, illustrating how acronyms help convey meaning quickly in online conversations.

Secondly, emojis play a significant role in communication. This video features emojis such as 👀 (eyes) to signify attention or curiosity, 🔥 (fire) to represent something impressive or exciting, and 🤔 (thinking face) to indicate a question or reflection. Emojis provide a visual layer to text, adding emotional and expressive depth to otherwise plain messages.

Lastly, hashtags like #boardgametour and #boardgametok are used to categorize content and connect with specific communities. These hashtags help others interested in board games find the video, demonstrating how hashtags can drive engagement and build niche audiences on social media platforms.

The usage of abbreviations, emojis and hashtags can be seen from Twitter’s posts. 1. The term “fomo” is used as an abbreviation of “fear of missing out”. 2. The usage of emoji is enough to describe the thoughts and opinions of the individual who post the tweet. 3. The hashtag usage in twitter are widely known and a hashtag can get until millions of post.

Conclusion: the usage of abbreviation, emojis and hashtags are widely seen throughout twitter and has become the new norm of the new generation where users can understand even the slightest use of emojis of what other users are trying to deliver.
