Quote: “There have been times over the years when I’ve tried to leave Hailsham behind, when I’ve told myself I shouldn’t look back so much. But then there came a point when I just stopped resisting” (5).

Kathy can be characterized from this quote because she seems to be relentless and nostalgic with and unconsciousness of her past defining her future and her life as a carer.

Themes:

Reminiscence and a theme of nostalgia when the narrator continuously recalls Hailsham. She keeps discussing her high school years and ow much she misses the times she had as a child.

Having to choose between donors is a theme of cause and effect and reminiscence because Kathy always says, “anyway, if i’d never started choosing, how would I ever have got close again to Ruth and Tommy after all those years?” (4). She had once known them in high school and now had the opportunity to be a carer so this way she was with familiarity when she was with them.

Devices:

Imagery when Kathy is explaining the times when she recalls all the senior guys playing on the field and laughing at Laura and all the actions of Tommy.

Conflict:

The conflict of Tommy and Kathy when she told him he messed up his polo shirt.

Quote: "There was an unspoken rule that we should never even raise the subject in their presence" (31).

The Gallery has never been spoken about by the Guardians but Tommy and Kathy were afraid they didn't know if the place really existed.

Conflicts:

A conflict between Madame and the girls, Ruth, Laura, Hannah, etc., is that they think Madame just wants them to work and doesn't actually like them.

Themes:

The theme of the novel so far is authoritativeness of others ruling over those who seem to be beneath them. The guardians are controlling the careers and the donors and especially at the times of their secret meetings in the Gallery, when all they can talk about is if someone will hear them.

Devices:

The common devices used are anecdotes and recalls, because all Kathy does is reminisce on the days she had at Hailsham.

Another device used is symbolism, when discussing the gallery it can be seen as a symbol for possibility or and end, because come to find out, the gallery is actually not real. Also the fact that Ruth tests her theory that Madame is actually afraid of the students at Hailsham can be seen as a symbol.

Characters:

We see some characterization of Kathy because she keeps feeling like they can be seen and are going to get in trouble with the Guardians, which shows she is nervous or worrisome of ticking off the Guardians.

She relies heavily on her high school life which sets a background for the way she is now.

Quotes: "There's no question Ruth was keen to keep the whole thing going. But they truth was, those of us who'd grown close to her, we each played our part in preserving the fantasy and making it last as long as possible" (52).

This was showing the demanding idea of secrecy in a place like a boarding school and especially one that is trying to keep your manifested destiny a secret form you.

Themes:

The theme of creativity vs. individuality, as discovered it seems an creative individual will be a carer and a non creative individual is a donor because they have no talent that the Guardians or Madame are looking for. They do not contribute to the sales of the art and that means they are useless in the eyes of the guards and Madame.

The theme of cloning is the guards want to replicate the people who are donors in their personalities or their behaviors so that they can have more donors.

Lying is a theme of the guards because they want to prevent the children form leaving the land of Hailsham so that they cant runaway form their destiny.

Landscape:

The landscape and setting are in mostly the three same places, Hailsham, village/ gallery, and the recovery rooms. The landscape is not very vast but it is symbolic because it shows the confinements of the donors and the carer and the amount of control they are under.

Symbols:

The woods often represent the place of evil or where people go and never come back. The fact that the students say, "The woods played on our imaginations the most after dark, in our dorms as we were trying to fall asleep" (50). The guards describe stories that are not even real and the kids play them up and believe they are true.

Just because she was giving them insight to what was outside of the boundaries of Hailsham she was forbidden form teaching them and fired.

Conflicts:

The conflict Ruth has between Midge is before Kathy luckily intervenes first so that Midge will not see Ruth in this state of uncertainty.

Themes:

Favoritism is obvious when they discuss Ruth and her relationship with Miss Geraldine in the prior chapter. But also The conflict of Ruth in her distinction between fantasy and her real life. When Kathy says something about in the cave she sees Ruth is crushed by it. This is a conflict between the interests and intentions of Kathy acted upon Ruth's lifestyle.

Symbols:

Judy Bridgewater's song, and Kathy's first tape cassette, it had gone missing and that was a symbol for her loss of Miss Emily, a real person surrounded by so much fake and altering causes.

Another symbol is the idea of realism and Miss Emily being a symbol of life and future. She was sent to the children as a pure and giving person, but because she never followed the rules of lying and deceiving the kids she was fired for being true.
