(Example from today's lesson)
I read this book over winter break and there are a lot of positive messages you can take away from the main character's experiences. I think one of the themes is "Despite what others say, it's important to be true to yourself." One part of the book that shows this theme is when the main character, Skye, refuses to drop out of the dance portion of the K-pop competition she's in, even after the judges, other contestants, people on social media, and even her mother are mean to her about her weight. She knows she's a good dancer and she loves dancing, so she stands up to one of the judges during the televised show. From Skye's words and actions throughout the story, I learned that as long as you can stay true to yourself and do what you love or want to do, then it doesn't matter what other people might say about you.

I finished this book last year and I think there is an important message you can take away from the main character's experience in this book. One of the themes is "Just because you are a different skin color than someone else doesn’t mean you are worth less than them or are unable to do the things that the other race can." One place in the text the author develops the theme is when Rose is working in the fields, Queen is sitting on the porch doing nothing and reading a magazine. Just because Queen has lighter skin than Rose she is treated much better than her because when Rose is working really hard she is just sitting there not doing anything of value and getting praised for it. From Rose's story people can learn that you're race doesn't matter and that you are just human.

I'm currently reading "Framed" and the important theme you can take away from the book is "Small details can lead to a bigger truth." One show of this is when the main character Florian figured out that they should arrest the Bank Manager because he noticed small details that added up to a bigger idea. For example he says, “If he was locked in the vault with everybody else, then he couldn’t have seen which direction the robbers drove off.” (165) Secondly another detail is Florian’s friend Margaret was over for dinner when Florian’s dad came home. Margaret figured out Florian’s dad went to California, played golf, and used someone else's golf clubs without anybody saying anything. An example is she says, “First of all, the trip to California. I knew that before we even sat down. Mr. Bates put his briefcase on the hall table and there is a copy of the Los Angeles Times sticking out of the pocket.” (40) Based on the examples from the book I learned that in life small details can lead to a bigger truth.

I finished this book a couple of days ago and I really recommend it. One theme in my book is that your head shouldn't just be focused on one thing. A part in my book where it shows this is that Devin my main character, has a best friend that is in Connecticut where Devin used to live but then moved to California, and Devin is really focused on her new soccer team making it to the play-offs. Devin is so focused that she keeps on forgetting to call Kara her best friend from Connecticut. Since Devin is just focused on soccer and not really ever calling Kara, Kara got really mad at Devin for not calling her. This shows that if you just put your head to one thing, than you will forget about a lot of other things. Devin eventually realized that she should also focus on her firendships as well as focusing on her new soccer team.

I finished tis book before winter break and there are a lot of positive messages you can take away from this story. I think one of the themes is "trying to fit in can cause unintended consequences." One example is when the popular girl who Impy thought was her friend made her draw a mean picture of Impy's other friend, Anita. Later when Anita saw the drawing Impy made, Impy had to pay the price- and by that I mean Anita didn't want to be friends with Impy anymore. I also think another theme is "trying to be something you're not can have negative consequences" because when she tried to become one of the mean popular girls, she was mean to her other friend Anita, and the consequence was Anita didn't really want be friends anymore. From Impy's actions, I learned to be myself, and not let other people control me.

Some details that develop the theme is when a nice girl named Summer, sat with Auggie during lunch time. Summer was nice enough to ask if he wanted to be friends with her. I think this is kind because Summer was the only person who wanted to be friends with Auggie. In addition, Auggie doesn’t have much friends because people don’t like him for his appearance. When he was younger, Auggie had 27 surgeries to his face which made him different then everyone in his school.

-Fiona Lee 634

A theme in Wonder, is Think before you speak. Some examples in the story that supports this is when it was Halloween and one of the main characters, Jack Will was talking to two other kids that didn’t like August. When they were talking, August walked in them talking about how August looked like. “ If I ever looked like him, I would kill myself.....” said Jack Will. This shows that you should always think before you speak because whatever you say, can hurt other peoples feelings.
-Selina Wen

The theme in AOT (Attack On Titan) right now is, always believe in others. One reason is, Eren was in a situation where he was about to get shot by a cannon because he turned into a titan but Armin saved him by persuading the people who were shooting him that he was good person. This shows that Eren believed in Armin to save him by communicating and not turning into a titan again. Another reason is, Eren was helping the survey corps by moving a boulder and using it to block the hole that the titans were using to get in but he went berserk and tried to kill the survey corps, that didn't stop the survey corps from protecting him until he wasn't mad anymore. This shows that they believed in him even while he was a threat. Another reason is, while everyone thought Eren was a threat they understood what happened they helped him and trusted him in assisting them in battle. In conclusion, the theme in AOT is, always believe in others.

I read a book called the mysterious Benedict society. In the book a very important theme in the story is truth, trust and friendship the author wants to tell the reader telling the truth is very important in life. In this story trusting people is very hard because you never know if they could be working for someone else. But only 4 kids trust each other and because of they're very tight bound. there friendship is a kind you only have with family. In the story I think these theme stand out the most because it's what we should be doing in our everyday lives trusting each other having friendships and telling the truth. These themes are true to the book because. Not long ago he said to his 4 friends " no matter what happens we will always tell each other the truth because our friendship we will trust each other and only each other" this quote is telling the author is trying to say something about the theme.

I think the moral of this story is sometimes you just need a friend to get through life with. While Lily's friend Margaret had moved her father also was sent to fight in the war. Lily needed to find a new friend and she did: Albert. Lily also has a habit of lying and she just has a hard time being honest. Once Lily and Albert open up to each other they developed a stronger understanding and friendship. During all that was going on they helped each other get through the hard times.

So he only had his aunt uncle and cousin which treated him so badly. They didn't like harry because harry was special like his parents. He was a wizard but in their eye he is a freak. But once harry was old enough he could go to his real family not the one he was born into but his Hogwarts family.

The theme in Avatar the Last Airbender: Search is that the past can't be forgotten. For example, a women named Ursa has a new life in her new place, but she must forget about her hometown because of her new duties. Ursa ignores those rules and still remembers about her old life. In the text it says, "'Ursa put down her pen and walked towards her trusted friend. 'Send this letter to Hira'a please' said Ursa. The women obeyed. Ursa went back to her room and opened one of her pictures on the wall. Inside that picture there was a collection of dragon masks. 'I will never forget you' said Ursa." Another example is when Zuko remembers his mother, Ursa, and is determined to find her with the help of Team Avatar and his insane sister, Azula. "Zuko sat up from his thrown and pointed his finger at Azula. 'Azula, what is in return for finding my mother' said Zuko. Azula grinned and laughed. 'Don't be silly, Zuzu. Why would I tell you?' asked Azula. Zuko sat back down. 'Because I will never forget our mother, Azula. But I know you will' said Zuko." This proves that the theme is the past can't be forgotten.

One evidence in the text that tells me this when Luke Skywalker realize that there will be 'no future' for him in the planet Tatooine because his aunt/uncle are forcing him to stay even though he doesn't want to. Even when feeling upset, look doesn't really give up and holds on to a little hope. But before he could do anything, he sees the Empire, whom kills him aunt/uncle. After this, his 'determination builds'. I learned that it is great to always have hope and never give up because of certain things. -SOichiro

One theme in my book is sometimes leaving something behind can change you. An example of this is on pg 32 when the text states "The, astoundingly, the gate clicked open. My mother had opened the gate! She dropped her paws to the ground and shouldered the gate aside, sniffing cautiously at the air on the other side of the fence. The she turned to look at me her, eyes bright. The message was clear: My mother was leaving." This piece of evidence shows that the mother of Toby was leaving. But again on pg 32 it shows that Toby decides to leave his old life behind him and stay with the new pack rather then his mother. This supports the theme that sometimes leaving something behind can change you because it shows that Toby, not going with his mother and deciding to stay with the new pack, he changed because he lives in a new area now with a new pack and a new leader. One other example is on pgs 61 and 67. On pg 61 it shows Toby leaving his new mother behind. The text stating "After I'd run a few feet I stopped, sensing something. I turned and looked back at my new mother, who was sitting back just inside the open gate, watching me." ".. Yet for a moment did I hesitate." This shows Toby leaving his new yard behind to run away, when he does so on pg 67 he meets Ethan who becomes his owner. -Shawn

Starr's witty and relatable narrative style contrasts with her reluctance to speak out at the start of the novel.
For example, Maverick states that he chose Starr's name because she was a light in a dark time for him. Throughout The Hate U Give, Starr acts as a light of hope and truth for many of the characters. She then realizes that what she did was wrong and it's best to evacuate the community and system.

This evidence reveals how Starr actually cared that Khalil got shot and how she was going to protest for his rights. One example of this in the text is when Percy joins the legion everyone disrespects him for looking like a Greek, and for being a son of Neptune. But Hazel and Frank accept Percy as a friend, even though everyone else was acting like he is weird. And by doing this Hazel's, and Frank's life was saved multiple times by Percy. This evidence shows that even though everyone was not trying to be kind to Percy, by helping Percy, and by being kind to him, Hazel and Frank are not dead just because of their kindness.

-Franco

Yair Shinhar 632

I read this book at the beginning of the school year in September and there were lots of positive messages and themes. The main theme of this book however is "Do your best forget the rest" because Percy tries so hard to reach his goal of getting all the way across the country, but if he wants to get to his goal, he's going to have to fight in order to get there. Over the course of time Percy fights his enemies to get through. He fights enemies like Medusa and Ares. And overall he succeeded and forgot of what happened and kept going. So this is why the main theme of Percy Jackson is "Do your best forget the rest."

When she was younger she was taken in by someone. Once she learned that she didn't know her last name she thought of Einstein because Albert Einstein is her idol. It may seem like she is not being herself but she doesn't copy his every move. She lives freely and is very smart. Another example is someone asked her f she was related to Albert and instead of lying she spoke the truth and said she didn't know and didn't think so. This proves that the theme is always be yourself and be honest.

In the book "Out Of My Mind," one theme in this book is too not judge people from their problems. I say this because my character Melody has a disability which doesn't allow her to walk or talk. Because of this, she constantly gets judged and avoided by most of the students in her school. However, Melody is an extremely smart person and people finally recognize that when she was the only person to get the max score in her class. She befriends a person named Rose and together they know more about each other. I did this theme because always in school people made fun of Addie for who she is .For example in the middle of class when the teacher called on her and everyone started to giggle and knowing that her answers are long, when she started to talk people groaned. Another reason is because in the classroom she was passed a not saying she needed a makeover in more than one way, and she kept being told this outside of class, but I think this means they are trying to change who Addie is. In conclusion I think the theme of book is don't bullying others based on who they are.

-Riley Bullingham

The Essay by Robin Yocum

In the book The Essay, one theme is that you should not let others define you. For example, the principal and the other teachers thought he was cheating on the essay because the rest of his family had been terrible people and his teachers had a lasting impression on his family. However he still completed another essay to prove them wrong even though everyone was telling him that he cheated. This is important because it shows that even when everyone was telling him that he cheated and he was not worth a lot he still completed another essay and was determined to prove them wrong. Another example is that his dad said to him that he had no chance of getting into college and he was an idiot, but John Lee still applied to colleges and worked on his grades. This is important because his dad was saying that he was an idiot and had no chance of being anything in his life but he didn't let that define him and he still tried his hardest to get into college. That is why i think that the theme in the book The Essay is that you shouldn't let others define your worth.

For example Zinkoff is the only one who comes into school with a Giraffe hat and the only one participating. This shows that it is ok to be different because by Zinkoff being different he is the one succeeding in class. Another example is that Zinkoff is the only one in his family who throws up right after he eats anything. This shows that it is ok to be different because he has a cool feature that no one else in his family has. Both these details show that it is ok to be different.

By Zand Kazemi

Also when she meets the poet club they make her feel safe and able to show who she is and not be scared anyone would judge her about it.
Emily DeFalco

The theme of my book is even though it might be impossible to achieve something, never give up on hope. One evidence is, ““It looks like a radio tower, and what type of silly toys is that?’ ‘Well,’ I said, ‘just stand back and watch.’” (p.198) The text also states, “I threw my hands in the air and shouted with joy, laughing so hard that I became dizzy. I held the bulb in triumph and addressed the unbelievers: ‘Electric wind!’ I shouted. ‘I told you I wasn’t mad!’” (p.200) This evidence reveals the theme by showing that at the beginning nobody believed in him because he was just a crazy kid that was just building silly toys. But at the end, William didn’t lose hope and actually succeeded with his dream to build a working windmill even though it was close to impossible to make. Another evidence is, “That month I helped clear the fields and prepare them for planting, working each day with joy in my heart. If I was in the fields near the windmill, I would pause in between swings of my hoe and just watch it spin.” (p.203) This supports my theme by showing that even though nobody believed in him, not even his family, he still achieves his dream of building the windmill and he is now proud of his work. He is truly admired by it because every time he is near it he stops and looks at his extraordinary work. Everyone thinks now that he is a genius because he created a functioning windmill by only using scrapes from a scrap yard even if he lived in a poor family and village. This showed me that even if nobody believes in you, you can still achieve your dreams just like William did.

-Laura Sambataro

The theme of my book is Together We Are Stronger. First Katniss thinks she can fight against Snow all on her own, and she plans to leave her squad. Then, when Boggs dies and gives her a whole different opportunity to help the squad, she realized that if the whole group works together, they can kill Snow. In the book it states "I need you to move on Katniss" Boggs said as he entered commands into the holograph. "As he was dying I realized that to kill Snow, I need the rest of the group to do it." This shows that Katniss realized that with the whole group, she would make more of an effort if she wasn't on her own. Throughout the book, people from her squad continuously kept dying, and that continued to put more emphasis on the theme. In the book, I learned that together you can make more of an effort to achieve your goal.

The theme in my book is Kindness is the key to the door. For example, Arcus is a very friendly boy in the Apollo school and he had a very hard time fitting because of his rainbow-colored hair and love of all things fashion. He is a famous fashionista on twitter, but he kept it as a secret for a whole year in 9th grade because he doesn't want to get made fun of for liking fashion as a guy. In the story Arcus met this popular girl at school named "Iris" who wears loads of makeup and would always make fun of Arcus fashion suggestions that he gives her. One part in the book that shows this is, "Iris you should wear less makeup and i think green looks good on you" -Arcus "Ew, why would i listen to a you?! Boys have no taste in fashion" -Iris. This part hurts Arcus feelings but even though, he would stay as a exhilarated person to everyone. At the end, Iris became friends with Arcus and Arcus told everyone in the school he was that famous "Gold Star" on twitter and not only he became famous online but also in school. Something i learned from this comic book is, looks doesn't matter in order to be famous/fit in and what matters is kindness because Kindness is the key to the door. -Jiaqi Li634

This requires a bit of explaining, but the most thorough explanation would be that there are four clans, each clan having its own leader. Eventually, all of the clans formed together to take down the impostor, and the people who had suspicions felt bad about that.

The Giver by Louis Lowery

(Ayelet)The Giver is about a boy who lives in a community where everything is the same. He later on is chosen to be the memory receiver, which means he learns about the world and no one except Jonas and the earlier receiver knows this. I think an important theme is to never give up, because towards the end of his journey he feels like giving up, but then gives himself the memory of warmth, which helped him continue his journey and that led him to a new community so he accomplished his goal. In the text it states “Wearily he remounted the bicycle. A steep hill loomed ahead. In the best conditions, the hill would have been a difficult, demanding ride. But now the rapidly deepening snow obscured the narrow road and made the ride impossible. His front wheel moved forward imperceptibly as he pushed on the pedals with his numb, exhausted legs. The bicycle stopped.” Later on in the journey it states “But the moment passed and was followed by an urge, a need, a passionate yearning to share the warmth with the one person left you love. Aching from effort, he forced the memory of warmth into the thin, shivering body in his arms. Gabriel stirred. For a moment they both were bathed in warmth and renewed strength as they stood hugging each other in the blinding snow. Jonas began to walk up the hill.” Another example is when Jonas receives memories it's sometimes hard for him because he has to learn about somethings that cause him pain and sadness like war. Even though this could be really hard he doesn't give up and continued to receive memory's. In the text it says “Overwhelmed by the pain, he lay there in the fearsome stench for hours, listened to the men and animals die, and learned what warfare meant. Finally, when he knew that he could bear it no longer and would welcome death himself, he opened his eyes and was once again on the bed. The Giver looked away, as if he could not bear to see what he had done to Jonas.” This shows that even when Jonas was going through so much pain he didn't give up and kept learning receiving memories to later on help his community.

Orlando exploded." Another part that states my claim is, " but i don't WANT to join the football team. Orlando said." you cant sign up without asking me!" and this part shows how they did not have Orlandos per mission to join the football team.

For example in the book there are 3 POV'S, each are running away from their countries because of war or being in trouble.

All in all, looks doesn't matter in order to be famous/fit in and what matters is kindness because Kindness is the key to the door. (re-posted)

My story is about a kid who was always rude to everyone he knows his route is family rude to his classmates in school and rude to his teachers. so I'm just going to skip a little bit of the story. a few days later his little sister was having a birthday party at Freddy Fazbear's pizzeria. which was really fun for a little sister. but he was fascinated by this Freddy doll. it was a plush bear with mechanical Parts just like the one that was on the stage just this one was mini. it costed $40 for the bear. but his sister decided not to get the bear and to go try to get the yarg Foxy from the tornado machine. and she ended up getting it but later his little sister offered him the toy and didn't return her big brother called her spoiled and she started crying and he ran away into the storage room that's where he met the lonely Freddy's. there he talks will only Freddy because he had no one else to talk to and the Freddy controlled his body after looking into his eyes when he was the lonely Freddy. really regretting what he had done in his past and after he started crying as the small Freddy doll he turned back into himself because he finally realized he's wrong

In the book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, the theme is honesty. The message is that bad children get what they deserve. They get punished.

n the book, “Sammy Keyes and the Search for Snake Eyes,” by Wendelin Van Draanen a motif from the story is searching. A repeated idea in the story is “search.” The word search is even in the titles. Sammy Keyes solves mysteries which makes mysteries another motif of the story. This helps develop the theme of “trust,” and that it is important to follow your instincts. In the story it said, “Everything was happening so fast. First she's scared to death of this guy; then she doesn't want anything to happen to him. And what was that about the elevator?” This evidence reveals the theme because it shows how Sammy trusted a stranger and tried to help her. The girl was being followed by a man and she gave Sammy her bag. Sammy took the bag without knowing what was inside. In the book it also said, “And then I went into a back room and started looking through mug books for Snake Eyes. I'd find him, I told myself. His face was branded in my brain.” This moment is significant because it shows Sammy’s determination. She wants to find the man that was following the girl and she wants to find out about the baby.

Also, on their mission to stop an evil man, they started to recognize their differences and realized that they must get through them and work together to complete their mission.
