"Hotel California" by The Eagles

The Eagles is an American band, created in 1971 in Los Angeles. The actual members are Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit and Bernie Leadon. Their most famous "Hotel California", written in 1976, is about friendship, drugs and the city Los Angeles .
Here are some of the lyrics:

-
"On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
"This could be Heaven or this could be Hell"
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (Any time of year)
You can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the Captain,
"Please bring me my wine"
He said, "We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine"
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
They livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise)
Bring your alibis"
-

In most of the verses, we can find alternate rhymes. For instance, in the first verse, the word "hair" rhymes with "air", the word "light" rhymes with "night" and the word "bell" rhymes with "Hell". We can find an antithesis in the first verse, indeed we can read or hear the words "Heaven" and "Hell" in the same sentence. In the second verse, right after the chorus, there is a parallelism with the structure "she got" and a second one with a structure "Some dance". We can also note that the word "dance" appears three times in only two sentences. While reading one of the sentence of the second verse, we can hear an alliteration with the words "sweet summer sweat". In the third verse, there is a synecdoche when the artist say "those voices are calling from far away". Finally, in the chorus, there is a parallelism with the structure "Such a lovely". Moreover, we can ear a rhyme between the words "place" and "face" who follow this parallelism.
At the end of the song, we can understand that the artist wrote about a place in Los Angeles in California, his hometown, where there are alcohol and drugs and where we can feel desperate feeling. There are a lot of emotions in the lyrics.

"We are the world" by Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson is an American singer, born in 1958 in Indiana. He is one of the most famous singer in the world, his fans gave him the name of "King of Pop"; his death in 2009 overwhelmed the world. Michael Jackson was involved in many associations because he wanted to make a better world for everyone. Michael Jackson was also famous for his dance moves. I am now going to present you the song We are the world, written in 1985; this song was recorded by United Support or Artists for Africa.
Here are the lyrics:

-

" There comes a times
When we hear a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
And it's times to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all

We can't go on pretending day by day
That someone, somewhere will soon make a change
We're all a part of God's great big family
And the truth, you know, love is all we need

We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day, just you and me

Send them your heart
So they'll know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stones to bread
and so we all must lend a helping hand

CHORUS

When you're down and out, there seems no hope at all
But if you just believe there's no way we can fall
Well, well, well, well let us realize oh! that a change can only come
When we stand together as one

CHORUSx3 "
-

In the first verse, we can you find the metaphor "it's times to lend a hand to life", this line of the verse highlights the fact that it is time to make a difference because the earth can't change without our help. By saying this, he wants to show that humans are about to ruin the world and that they have to change they attitude after which he says "the greatest gift of all". He wants to include everyone with the word "all" and show with an hyperbole that they could not make a better thing than change the world.

In the second verse, Michael Jackson links the words "someone", "somewhere" and "soon" with the first sound of the words. Indeed, this repetition of the sound connects the words and their meaning.

In the chorus, there is an anaphora of "we are" to insist once again on the fact that they are all the same and that they all should change. He continues by saying "we're saving our own lives". This sentence is one of the most meaningful of the song, he displays the fact that if humans don't change anything in their habits, they will in a certain way kill themselves.

At the end of the chorus, he affirms that people will finally make a difference and protect the world.

In the fourth verse, we can find the metaphor "we all must lend a helping hand", similar to the one in the first verse. At the beginning of the verse, he also says "send them your heart". The word "heart" has a double meaning, Michael Jackson wanted to talk about their love that they should share but he wanted to talk about help as well. Humans will be able to change the world with love and help.

In the last verse, the interjection "oh!" shows that they feel a lot of emotions while singing this song.

Finally, there is a repetition of the chorus at the end. We can say that it is to emphasize on the lyrics and especially on the last sentence "it's true we'll make a better day, just you and me". He wanted to finish his song with a positive line go give hope.
