There are several themes/ideas that will be expressed throughout this project. One theme is agency and leadership. This will be explored by how young black women exercise agency, leadership, and agency in shaping their own futures and contributing to social change. In this project participants will discuss the importance of representation and visibility of young black women in media, arts, politics, and other domains. The next theme will be "Community and Solidarity". This theme will be included by highlighting the significance of community support, sisterhood, and solidarity among young black women. The last and most important theme I aim to include is "Self-Love and Empowerment". Through this I will celebrate the journey of self discovery, self-acceptance, and self-love among young young black women. RESEARCH METHODS

Interviews

The cornerstone of this project involves conducting in-depth, semi-structured interviews with black girls and women from various backgrounds and locations. These interviews aim to uncover personal stories that provide rich, qualitative data on their lived experiences. Key topics will include identity formation, the influence of family and community, experiences of navigating social settings, the impact of digital spaces, and approaches to mental health and well-being. The interview will be conducted both in-person and virtually to accommodate participants' comfort and convenience. Each session will be recorded using high-quality audio and video equipment to ensure clear and engaging content. Transcripts of the interviews will be created for detailed analysis and integration into podcast episodes. This method will allow us to capture nuanced and deeply personal insights that will form the narrative backbone of the project.

PHOTOGRAPHY SESSIONS

To complement the audio narratives, we will conduct portrait photography sessions with the same participants interviewed. These sessions will take place in locations that hold personal significance to the participants, such as their homes, community centres, or favourite outdoor spaces. The goal is to visually document the environments and contexts that shape their identities and experiences. By obtaining consent, we will capture both posed and candid shots that reflect the participants personalities and stories. The photographs will be carefully selected and edited to accompany the podcast episodes, creating a powerful visual dimension that enhances the storytelling. The visual documentation aims to provide a more holistic view of black girlhood, adding depth and emotional resonance to the narratives shared in the interviews.

It is an R&B and neo-soul album featuring experimental and artistic elements. The tone is thoughtful, empowering, and very personal. The aesthetics are modest but striking, with exquisite and emotive pictures that highlight Black beauty and culture. She uses music poetry and visual art to explore and explain complicated ideas. The inclusion of interludes with interactions with family members gives depth and perspective to her story.

A multidisciplinary strategy can be used to produce a deep and engaging experience. The influence of the album on my final major project would inspire me to utilise visual art, and to examine and convey the realities of young black women. I would like to showcase the richness and beauty of black girlhood, I could make a digital art collection or other visual content that goes well with the stories that are shared on my site and uses simple, sophisticated aesthetics.

my initial thoughts & objectives

I have decided to do a podcast for my project and also incorporate photography to add to the depth of my project. This project will be focusing on navigating black girlhood in social , cultural, and digital spaces.

The core objective of this project is to create a platform where black girls and women can share their stories, experience, and perspectives. Through the podcast, I hope to foster a sense of community and understanding, shedding light on the unique challenges and triumphs that come with being a black girl in today's world. The photography component aims to visually capture the essence of these experiences, adding depth and a personal touch to the narratives.

setting the foundation:

today I worked on establishing the groundwork, I explored potential podcast subjects and interview question, hoping to cover a wide range of experiences and challenges. Personal identity, cultural legacy, internet presence and mental health are some important topics I want to research. In addition, I started reaching out to possible guests who may offer various and informative insights.
For the photography, I envisioned a sequence of photographs that would complement the audio story while also standing alone as powerful statements.

challenges & considerations:
one of the immediate challenges I can foresee is ensuring that the project remains authentic and respectful of the participants stories. It is very important to create and safe and supportive environment for guests to share their experiences openly. Additionally, balancing the technical aspects of podcasting and photography with the emotional and narrative elements will be essential.

Separately, I am filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation. This project is not just about documenting stories; it's about celebrating the resilience, creativity, and strength of black girls. I am eager to learn from the participants and hope that their stories will inspire and resinate with a wider audience.

As I move forward, I am committed to approaching this project with sensitivity, openness, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact. Today's reflections have solidified my vision and motivation, and I am looking forward to the journey ahead.

Before I asked these lovely girls to model for this shoot I explained my vision for this shoot and the goal of my entire project. I managed to encourage the girl on the left with glasses to model despite her initial shyness, resulting in capturing wonderful images of these two lovely black girls. I believe that this experiment holds significant value both in terms of its process and outcome.

By pushing the shy girl to venture out of her comfort zone and act as a model, I believe I displayed a dedication to empowerment and inclusivity. I hope my encouragement helped her feel valued and seen, instilling confidence and agency in her own representation.

The photographs of the two Black girls highlight their individuality, beauty, and distinct personalities. This shoot allowed me to capture true moments of connection and self-expression, emphasising the beauty and resilience of Black girlhood. Experiment number three in my project involves photographing my sister and experimenting with different factors such as angles, lighting, and background. This experimentation was inspired by the work of Bennie Rosevelt, a famous photographer noted for his creative approach to photography.

This allowed me to experiment with different photographing techniques without feeling the strain of working with unknown models. The use of various backgrounds added versatility and variation to the shoot, allowing me to investigate how varied locales and surroundings might affect the overall mood and look of the images.

Bennie Rosevelt's work inspired my approach to the shoot, particularly in terms of trying out new angles, lighting settings, and compositions. Rosevelt was recognised for his dramatic compositions and inventive use of light and shadow, which inspired me to try out similar methods in my own photography. Rosevelt's ability to capture the essence of his models with precision and clarity inspired me, and I believe to have achieved a similar level of depth and emotional resonance in my images. However, in some of these shots I believe I could have balanced the light and shadow as there are a few frames that are too low exposure for my liking.

During the session, I tried out numerous angles to catch my sister from different views. This allowed me to experiment with how different camera angles affected the overall composition and visual impact of the images. Similarly, I changed the lighting configurations to see how different lighting circumstances affected the tone and feel of the photographs. This exploration entailed employing artificial lighting (in this case street lampposts).

By experimenting with different backgrounds, I was able to observe how the background would compliment or contrast with the model, bringing depth and context to the images. This background with the buildings and cars in the back worked the best, but exploration enhanced the shoot's overall storytelling, allowing me to create visually dynamic and interesting photographs.

In the future I will practice and experiment with various lighting techniques and camera settings in order to gain a better understanding of how they affect the overall exposure and image quality so that I won’t make the same mistake of allowing the shots to be too dark.

Experimentation 4 in this project involved a personal, at-home photoshoot with just me and my friends, with the focus on capturing candid shots of my friend off guard. This experimentation was inspired by the work of Ronan McKenzie, a photographer known for her intimate and authentic portraits that celebrate the beauty of everyday life.

Ronan McKenzie's work inspired this experiment because McKenzie's approach is consistent with my goal of getting candid images of my friend in a calm and natural situation. Inspired by McKenzie's emphasis on honesty and spontaneity, I sought to produce photos that convey true emotion and connection rather than contrived or posed compositions. I believe this did go very well as the natural lighting coming in from behind the camera on the very first pic is absolutely perfect. The balance in light in each picture is great.

In terms of photographing technique, I used a photojournalistic approach, comparable to McKenzie's style. This method emphasises observation and anticipation, allowing me to capture fleeting moments of emotion and connection as they naturally occur. I experimented with composition, lighting, and framing to create visually appealing photographs that capture the intimacy and emotion of the occasion, while also paying homage to McKenzie's aesthetic.

I believe I should begin to experiment more with this technique as I believe this is the most successful experiment because of that raw emotion depth to the photos as they are all off guard and create that sense of intrigue.

However, In the process of finishing the secondary research phase on the works of four distinct artists, there can be chances to delve deeper into their creative contributions and thematic representations. The depth of the research findings could be improved by using more structured analysis techniques, including thematic coding or comparison analysis.

However, during the production phase, it’s obvious more can be done to improve participant involvement and collaboration. A sense of ownership and investment among participants can be fostered by offering clear instructions, feedback channels, and chances for creative participation. I think these elements would enhance the audiences experience of this project entirely.

through experimenting with different camera and editing techniques, I decided which artist I was drawn to the most and it was the contemporary/modern photographers. I knew I wanted a cultural but contemporary type of project but through experimenting it has taught me what I like with editing pictures and what i don’t. I began to look at some of Aliyah Townsends portraits of black women for reference and began having shoots inspired by her art. I would direct the models in the shoot to recreate a pose that I would have seen in Aliyah Townsends portfolio.

After experimenting with camera and editing techniques I initiated my thought process on the background and lighting for my shoots. Most of the artists I have researched use bright lights, but some do know how to balance the two. So that is also another element i was experimenting with.

Moreover, because I wanted my podcast to be listened to solely instead of have a filmed one, I created some posters for the cover of the podcast. For podcast I invited a black woman from a different background so that i can maintain a variety of perspective when she came on the podcast. Because the first person is a samba dancer i decided to base my poster over a picture with her in a samba costume on a gorgeous beach. i’ve mostly edited those with very vibrant, warm tones because samba is a very large part of the culture in brazil therefore I wanted to have a bit of a yellow bright tone to pay homage to the brazilian flag.

To improve, I could have incorporated a few more test shots with the models, this would’ve helped my project because I would’ve had more footage to experiment with and be able to gain a deeper understanding of camera techniques through practice
