Arnott's BBQ and Pizza shapes have long been a favourite snack food for Australian's with sales of over 74m per year. In 2016 Arnott's changed the recipe and launched their 'new & improved' flavours claiming to be a response to customer feedback. The 'new and improved' flavours were universally canned resulting in consumer and media backlash. Arnott's were forced to revert back to the original recipe following loss in sales and reputational damage.

In 1985, as a response to Pepsi's taste test, Coca-Cola changed it's recipe and released 'New Coke' to the market. Consumer backlash was immediate, not just to the taste, but to Coca-Cola foregoing its proud tradition (they were considered un-American). In a matter of months 'New Coke' was pulled from shelves and 'Classic Coke' was restored. But not before the change nearly bankrupted the company.

Founded in 1985 Blockbuster video was arguably the most iconic brands in the video rental space. Peaking in 2004 Blockbuster employed 84,300 people worldwide and had 9,094 stores. Blockbuster was unable to transition to a new emerging digital model of customer viewing. Blockbuster was bankrupt in 2010. However in 2000 Netflix approached Blockbuster with an offer to buy for $50 mill USD, the CEO of Blockbuster was not interested as her perceived that the digital format was "a very small niche business" and Netflix at the time was losing money. Fast forward to July 2017 Netflix has 103.95 million subscribers and a revenue of more than $8.8 billion USD.

Sony Betamax

In 1976, Sony released Betamax video format and players as a higher quality alternative for the VHS format. Being a child of the 70’s I recall well the almost religious approach consumers took in taking sides on the debate. The longer tape length of the VHS ultimately won out over quality and Betamax perished. It wasn’t the end for Sony – nor was it their last lost bet. As a side note we, unfortunately, were a Betamax family – until we could afford a vhs player we watched the very few movies available…..over and over again.

Delorean Motor Company

The DeLorean Motor Company started in 1975 and intended to produce 'ethical' super-cars. Their first vehicle, the DMC-12, failed to live up to such expectations. Lacking performance and suffering quality issues, consumers and critics did not embrace the car. As the company fell further into financial crisis, its founder, John Delorean was caught buying 🤬 which he hoped to sell to keep the company going. Although acquitted, this proved to be another major catalyst for the demise of the company. The company was closed 1982, leaving in its wake factory workers and investors who'd lost hundreds of millions through embezzlement and questionable dealings.
