General intelligence, also known as g factor or two factor, refers to the existence of a broad mental capacity that influences performance on cognitive ability measures. Charles Spearman first described the existence of general intelligence in 1904. According to Spearman, this g factor was responsible for overall performance on mental ability tests.

In Guilford’s Structure of Intellect (SI) theory, intelligence is viewed as comprising operations, contents, and products. There are 5 kinds of operations (cognition, memory recording, divergent production, convergent production, evaluation).
6 kinds of products (units, classes, relations, systems, transformations, and implications).
4 kinds of contents (figural, symbolic, semantic, behavioral). Since each of these dimensions is independent, there are theoretically 120 different components of intelligence.
