It could be considered a slow burn love story, though I would consider it more of a confession, or a harness for potentiality. The main character Elio begins to develop strong feelings for the summer guest Oliver. These feelings are confusing, yet strong enough to prevent him from thinking of anything else. Oliver, however, decides to toy with Elio.

It is the type of portrayal that makes you feel what the protagonist is feeling, despite you not being written into the story. I relate to the main character, so it has become somewhat of a comfort read for me. It is a story about desire, and the effects of its potency.
