Craft and Identity by Sean-Henry Fitzsimons

Identity and heritage are two huge sectors in the craft, fashion and textiles industry. I am currently working on a research project of making a Western education institution a more inclusive place to embrace self-identity in design associated with knitted craft and textiles. Please use this mapping padlet, to share a yarn-based craft from your heritage, something you would consider, this is your country's, town or family's craft. Also what makes it authentically associated with your identity, could a heritage craft present an identity card in your creative journey and career?

Aran Jumper/sweater was an old identity format for clan/family members that associated an arrangement of stitches and cable designs to ones family or heritage identity. Now a world wide fabrication, but lost in the sense of its pagan routes and symbolism behind each stitch design.

Donegal Tweed Yarn, is a world-famous yarn-producing company, still family-run, based in Ireland. As an Irish designer, it is custom to use this or see it within Irish designer collections, for a lot of my youth, I didn't appreciate the yarn until I found who I was as a designer during my studies. Donegal tweed has become a statement in both my machine knitting and hand knitting. It is a wonderful yarn, that is still a global player in the yarn industry.
