Well, from the essay itself, it was clearly stated how these emergency relief shelter is not built according to the people's needs. The solutions proposed to the problems was a mismatched due to the wide-spread myths perpetuated by the media. Which, had influenced the capabilities of designers to design a shelter which would actually full-filled the real needs of these post-disaster victims.

I am agree with everyone's opinion. The shelter should be build according to the people's need and as for that some survey regarding the problem shall be done. Its to ensure that the effectivesness of the shelter can be improvised and can be used for a long term

However the shelter have certain period before it passed its effectiveness. Moreover, most victims does not feel comfortable living in shelter in long period.

Yes. Well, perhaps, if the design of the shelter should, in any possible way, satisfied the need of these people, hence, it can be consider as a good emergency relief shelter.

Yes, I do see eye to eye with you on that matter, Faezzudin, where some of these shelter are not built for long-term usage. Moreover, most of the relief shelter are built according to military type layout, which put expediency and perceived before sensitivity to the refugees' living patterns. This, therefore, results in a slow recovery process for the victims since this kind of shelter will be suppressing the locals and the authorities' abilityand desire for their own rebuilding.

Even if for a short period of time, the shelter must provide comfortable place for the victims to stay for awhile. After the stressful and life threatening ordeal they have face at least the shelter can make them feel a bit better.

I would like to add on Hidayah's statement just about the spreading of myths around the designers. In my opinion , the designers should not concerntrate on what they heard instead they should work on what they see.

for me, the effectiveness of those shelter should based on how the designers built the shelter not only make the victims felt comfortable..but also make them feel safe in there

Different climate need different type of shelter. As for tropical climate in Malaysia, it is the ventilation that plays an important role. We can see in Kelantan how the victims are currently facing drought after the big flood.

Yes, I second your opinion Farah. The designers should have made their designs based on the past history on post-disaster situation and improvised on the older designs to suits more with the geographical condition of the places where the shelter were to be built.

Faez opinion regarding the different type of shelter due to different type of climate gives me a food for thought since it tells us need extra precaution steps in building the shelter for those who are in needs.

Yes, June. Those shelters, beside being a comfortable place to live, should also be a safe place for these victims. Hence, these shelters should be built to be able to withstand another upcoming disaster in the future.

In my opinion, these shelters should have a more sensitive planning. Designers should create a shelter that are more able to respond to community needs.

That is true Hidayah. The design should respond to sensitivity of the community. For example shelter that enable women to nurses their babies. This matter is always left behind by the authorities.

In the early days of September 2005, the problems of these shelters had causes office buildings, motels, hotels, and even cruise ships being utilised to house the flood refugees. Based on this matter, it is clearly seen that, only in a post-disaster situation that shelter problems become significant to public.

Emergency time needs fast action. However using public premises is not a very good idea for a long run because this will slow down the recover process of the community.

Yes, Faez. Those kind of matters are very crucial for the survival of these flood refugees but this important criterion is often omitted when these relief shelters are being design.

Shedpack is very suitable for disaster in Malaysia especially in my opinion. Due to its feature it can cater the victims better.

Such as shelter box? It comes complete with a self-built tent which can withstand strong wind, blankets,and other basic necessities?

Based on its feature, in my opinion shelter box is more to disaster such as earthquake or typhoon. How about you guys?

In my very own opinion, I think shelter box is a complete-pack with every basic necessities we need, stored in that one box. But, it is not mobile-friendly as it is not easily moved and are not logistically flexible making it hard to be distributed to victims.

Every type of shelter has it own advantage and disadvantage. As there are many types of shelter the authorities should consider of what kind of shelter is more suitable for the victims depends on the type of disaster.

Well, to conclude, I think it is vital for everyone, not just the authorities, to give deeper insight towards this issues. The building of shelter ,therefore, should consider all criterias from aspects of security, cost, and also the needs of the communities. Hence, everyone shall give their best effort to provide a better shelter in facing future post-disaster situations.
