I just finished reading a great fiction book called Bone and Shadow. It is a great example of Young Adult and Teenage Literature. It highlights the deep internal struggles that teenagers face with great detail and carefully chosen words. I feel like just about anyone could relate to the main character, Alina Starkov.

In the book Bone and Shadow, a basic understanding of the magic in the book is required, and provided in the first few pages. The people in this book range from common people to kings, nobles, and even grisha, or magic people. The grisha play an important role in the story. Grisha have magical powers like summoning wind and fire, while some are just unnaturally good at building things, or inventing new materials to build with. The leader of the grisha, The Darkling, is one of the main characters that finds Alina and takes her to the palace to train her. Alina is a sun summoner, a rare form of grisha that hasn't been seen in years. She is important because only she has the power to destroy the Fold. What is the Fold? The shadow fold also plays an important role in this book. The Shadow Fold, also referred to as the Unsea, is a cloud of blackness, that divides the country, Ravka, in half. Inside the Fold there is no sunshine, everything is except monsters is dead, and these monsters eat humans. Alina, being a sun summoner, is trained to use her power to summon sunlight inside the Fold. Sunlight is the only thing that can destroy it, and the monsters inside it, the Volcra. As if that isn't enough, Alina has to suffer constant heartache, torn between the boy she grew up with, Mal, and the man she just was taught to fear, the Darkling.

This book is a great read and I would recommend it to everyone. It is a book that really highlights what it's like to feel like an outsider in a world you belong to, and what it is like to love more than one person at a time. This book is packed with everything you can imagine, a country at war, magic, monsters, a steamy romance, and internal struggles the likes of which could destroy the entire country, maybe even the world. In conclusion, this book is great and I think everyone should read it.
