Nick wants to become a banker. Nick moves to West Egg, next to Gatsby’s mansion. Nick meets Daisy, Tom, and Jordan at the Buchanan residence for dinner. Tom is a police chief, Daisy is still Tom’s wife, and Jordan is still a golf champion. Tom talks about trying to catch a bank heister but keeps getting away, but the police may have a lead on the criminal. The next week, Nick and Tom go into town, where Nick meets Tom’s mistress Myrtle Wilson and they get drunk. A few days later, Nick is invited to Gatsby’s for the party and he meets him there with Jordan for the first time. Sometime later, Gatsby and Nick go out for lunch and Gatsby tells Nick about his fake past. Nick overhears Gatsby and Wolfsheim talking about how Gatsby owes him money.

After the heist, Tom realizes that the heister was Gatsby. He tells Mr. Wilson that it was Gatsby who killed Myrtle. Gatsby and Nick go back to Gatsby’s house and find Daisy waiting there. She sees the bags of money and realizes Gatsby is the bank heister. Gatsby explains that he was pulling off heists to pay back Wolfsheim and he needed to pay him back because of the money he was given to impress her. He also says that now they can be together. She gets into an argument with Gatsby and claims that Gatsby wanted too much from her. Gatsby calms her down and tells her to call him and then she leaves. As the night continues Nick stays and Gatsby tells Nick his real past with Dan Cody and Jay Gatz. However, as morning came Nick had to go to work as if nothing happened, leaving Gatsby alone. While waiting for Daisy to call Gatsby goes swimming and during that time Gatsby is shot and killed as Mr. Wilson found him. Mr. Wilson then kills himself.

Message: Don’t let love cloud your judgment

This is a logical message because everything Gatsby does is for Daisy. Because he was too poor for Daisy to love him, he had to illegally obtain money from Wolfsheim. He then had to pull off bank heists, which is obviously highly illegal, to pay Wolfsheim back. He kills Myrtle in the process of one of the heists. He committed multiple crimes just so Daisy would love him and in the end, his decisions just drove Daisy away. There could have been other options to earn money and gain Daisy’s love. Of course, it would take longer, but Gatsby took the dangerous road because he had no patience.

Scenes Removed

Scene 1: Removed Scene when Nick talks about wanting to become a bondsman. This scene needs to be removed because it no longer fits in the story, as Nick is going to be a banker instead of a bondsman.

Scene 2: Remove original meeting at the Buchanan house. This scene is removed but, it is still kept in the film but edited. This scene does not fit as it contains part of the old storyline.

Scene 3: Remove the scene where Gatsby pulls Jordan aside at his party. This is removed as Jordan no longer is asked by Gatsby to have Nick invite Daisy to tea.

Scene 4: Remove all scenes with the owl-eyed man. He no longer adds anything to the story and would be a waste of a scene.

Scene 5: Remove where Gatsby and Wolfsheim are at the restaurant together and how Gatsby has to leave for a phone call. Also, remove where Wolfsheim has to back up Gatsby’s “story”. Remove all information Gatsby tells about Wolfsheim except where he says he is a gambler. This is removed because it does not fit with the new story and the atmosphere between Wolfsheim and Gatsby is different.

Scene 6: Remove the tea time with Jordan and how she tells Nick about how Gatsby loves Daisy and to invite her for tea at his house. Also remove original meeting between Gatsby and Nick outside his house later in the night about how Gatsby offers Nick some way to get money. This is removed because Jordan is no longer going to tea with Nick and the talk outside Nick’s house between Nick and Gatsby is changed.

Scene 7: Remove when Gatsby, Nick, Daisy, Jordan, and Tom go into town and have the fight between Gatsby and Daisy. Scene removed because they never go into town but rather Gatsby and Nick leave to do the heist.

Scene 8: Remove when Daisy hits Myrtle. Removed because the way Myrtle dies is changed.

Scene 9: Remove when Tom and Nick are looking around the gas station and where Tom tells Mr. Wilson that it was Gatsby. Removed because they never go to the gas station and it does not make sense to keep it.

Scene 10: Remove scene where Mr. Wilson gets his gun from his garage. This is removed as Mr. Wilson, in the aftermath of the heist, steals a gun from Tom to kill Gatsby.

Scenes Added

Scene 1: Create a scene where it explains how Nick wants to move to New York to become a banker. This scene is added to start off showing why Nick wants to move to New York and with his different job, unlike the book.

Scene 2: Add changed dinner at the Buchanan house explaining how Tom has become a police chief and is currently looking for a mystery bank heister. This scene is changed because it introduces new information to the story not given in the original scene.

Scene 3: Add a scene where Gatsby invites Nick to lunch at the party as he wants to explain something to Nick. This is added because instead of Jordan being the messenger Gatsby is doing it himself this time.

Scene 4: Add scene where Wolfsheim and Gatsby and seen talking before Gatsby and Nick enter for lunch. Nick overhears something about how Gatsby owes Wolfsheim money. This is added to show the conflict between Gatsby and Wolfsheim.

Scene 5: Add scene where Gatsby and Nick talk outside Nicks house after getting home from lunch where Gatsby explains how he is in love with Daisy and would like to have Nick invite her over to tea at Nick’s house. Nick agrees to invite Daisy over. However, before Gatsby leaves Nick asks about the conversation between Wolfsheim and him. Gatsby responds saying that Wolfsheim gave him lots of money to pay for his mansion and lifestyle and now Gatsby needs to get him the last of his money back. Gatsby tells Nick he has been robbing banks to get his money. Gatsby tells Nick he needs Nick to get into the final bank, where Nick works. Nick reluctantly agrees to help Gatsby pull off the heist. This is added to progress the story with the new storyline.

Scene 6 & 7: Add two different scenes where Gatsby and Nick are seen planning the heist. This is added to show that Gatsby and Nick are working on their goal and that show it is important to Gatsby.

Scene 8: Add where Gatsby and Nick leave the Buchanan after Tom’s and Gatsby’s fight about Daisy and about how he thinks the bank heister is Gatsby. Tom yells at Gatsby saying that he is a coward and a cheat. This is added as the in town fight scene was removed and Gatsby and Tom still need to fight, for Gatsby to start losing Daisy.

Scene 9: Gatsby and Nick arrive at the bank, at sundown. They see Myrtle and Mr. Wilson inside arguing about how this money will allow them to leave. They put their masks on and enter. They fill their bags with money and Tom and his police arrive outside. Gatsby and Nick take Myrtle and Mr. Wilson hostage. In an escape attempt, Myrtle is shot by Gatsby. This forces Tom to enter and start wildly shooting. Gatsby says “come on, old sport” and Nick and Gatsby escape. This is added because it is key to the new storyline and involves Myrtle’s new death.

Scene 10: Scene where Nick and Gatsby arrive at Gatsby’s house and see Daisy waiting. Daisy sees money bags and figures out Gatsby is bank heister and realizes that he is not an honest and pure person. She leaves saying she will call back in the morning. Nick stays at Gatsby’s. This is added because it connects the end of the bank heist to getting to Gatsby’s where Gatsby tells Nick his real story. Also, it shows how Daisy is uncertain.

Scene 11: Tom, after hearing Gatsby say “come on, old sport” knows it is Gatsby. He finds Mr. Wilson in the aftermath of the bank heist and tells him that Gatsby killed Myrtle. Mr. Wilson steals a gun from Tom and goes off to find Gatsby. This is added as it shows how Tom tells Mr. Wilson and how he leaves to kill Gatsby.
