What is the use of DNA in forensic Investigation?

DNA has become one of the most accurate tools for the identification of individuals and is used by thousands of laboratories mainly in:

1. The identification of biological traces of interest in the criminal investigation of very diverse crimes: Blood, hair, body fluids, semen, vaginal fluids and other tissue cells are collected as samples. Two types of samples are collected: one from the crime scene and another from the supect. These samples are processed and then using molecular biology techniques, the DNA is identified and compared in the two samples. If the DNA sequence is the same in the two samples it is evidence that the cells are from the same person and therefore, is responsible for the crime. It can take from three weeks to three months to carry out a DNA test.

2. The identification of human remains and missing persons: In the last decade, thousands of DNA samples have been donated to the office of the forensic doctor of the city. Most include saliva swabs from close relatives but also DNA extracted from items used by missing persons, including toothbrushes, combs, razor blades and, once, even a sanitary napkin. They have led to the identification of approximately 50 missing persons each year, all of whom have been found dead. But for many who have sent samples, the wait continues.

3.The biological investigation of paternity and other relationships of kinship: The paternity test is the DNA analysis that alows determining the genetic link between an individual and his male parent. The human being, having sexual reproduction, inherits a copy of the genetic information of the mother and another of the father. The genetic paternity test is based on comparing the genetic information of both.

It is in the latter where there are sometimes a series of changes or mutations that are transmitted through the mother and can lead to a mitochondrial disease. This type of pathologies affect one of every 5,000 children, although it is estimated that one in 200 women could be carriers.

Each one of our neurons or our liver cells carries a copy of the entire human genome and thanks to that it can work.
