It says that the flag stands for freedom, and that no one can take that away. The pilgrims wanted freedom, breaking away from Europe. “I gladly stand up and defend her” the song says. The pilgrims left Europe because they wanted to stand up for themselves. The song “God Bless the U.S.A” is such a great song and relates to the voyage of the pilgrims.

In All the King's Horses, one of the lyrics says "Caught in the thought of that time, when everything was fine". This relates to how at first, the Pilgrims had a good, steady relationship with the Wampanoag people. Then the song says "All the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put me back together again". This represents how the expanding of territory by the Pilgrims caused a war between them and the Wampanoag people. During this war, there was the highest ratio of deaths to total people. After the war, the two groups fell apart and couldn't be "put back together again".

The first verse of the song states, "At first I was afraid, I was petrified. Thinking, I couldn't live without you by my side. After spending nights thinking how you did me wrong, I grew strong and learned how to get along". This shows how the Pilgrims left England because they were being prosecuted but gained good relationships with the Wampanoag Tribe and learned how to manage the land and survive in America. They grew more successful because they learned from Squanto and the Wampanoag Tribe.

Can you feel it now? These walls that they put up to hold us back will fall down. This revolution, the time will come, for us to finally win. And we’ll sing hallelujah, we'll sing hallelujah." Change by Taylor Swift is about resisting and standing up for what you believe even though people are "putting up walls to hold us back". Then finally the walls fall and it's a "revolution". This relates to the theme of the Pilgrims and Puritans and their excitement when they heard that they would be able settle in America. They had been holding on to their beliefs for so long even though the Anglican leaders would punish them for it representing "walls that they put up". Finally they are given a chance to escape persecution and practice their religion freely so "the walls" fall down. When they are given permission to settle in America everything changes and it is "a revolution".

The song Believer is about how pain had forced the singer to push through and eventually found a better future for them-self. It’s about how hurt and pain made the speaker push through and look to a brighter future. In a way that’s what happened to the Pilgrims and the Puritans. They were experiencing injustice and America was a sort of escape. There, they could set their own rules and make their own colonies, as well as practice the religion that the wanted to (for the most part). In the last half of the first verse it says, “Second things second, don’t you tell me what you think that I can be I’m the one at the sail, I’m the master of my sea,” meaning, don’t tell me what to do when I can do it myself. Therefore, the Pilgrims and Puritans kept to their religion and started anew.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MJAg0VDgO0

The song Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees relates well because all of the pilgrims really wanted to stay alive and survive the winter. "feel the city breakin and everybody shaken, and were stayn alive stayin alive" this also relates because the whole "city" (colony) is trying to stay alive and not die during the winter.

https://youtu.be/_Vj092UgKwQ

Mr. Wright - H Period Imagine coming from England to escape the persecution of the Anglican Church, only to be persecuted once again by fellow Separatists. That must have been the isolated feeling that Roger Williams and his followers must have experienced as they made their start in the new land. One song that seems to speak to the experience of Williams and his followers as they were banished from Massachusetts, and forced to settle in what became Rhode Island, is the song “I Want to Break Free” by the band Queen. “I Want to Break Free” captures the excitement that Williams and his followers must have felt at their opportunity to establish a colony that was founded on celebrating tolerance in nearby Providence. At one point in the song, singer Freddie Mercury sings, “I’ve fallen in love for the first time, and this time I know it’s for real.” This lyric suggests that the singer had thought that he was in love before, but has found something better and more significant in his life. When Roger Williams made it to Rhode Island, he decided to create a government that was better and more accepting towards different people in which, “provisions were made for the security of religion and the rights of conscience” (Wright, 251). The song "I Want to Break Free," captures the essence of Roger Williams’ turbulent break from Massachusetts in order to settle in a new and peaceful land.

The line "All the underdogs in the world
A day may come when we lose
But it is not today
Today we fight!" shows how despite the odds the settlers kept fighting every day until they achieved their goals. The lines "We won’t ever die today
Light shines through the darkness
It wants a new world and you
Oh baby yes I want it" also depicts they settlers held on to hope for their new world.

Burning Bridges is about braking bonds, and moving on and starting something new. That is exactly what the English did when they left, a quote from this master piece that is an great example would be: "Ancient bonds are breaking, Moving on and changing sides. Dreaming of a new day,
Cast aside the other way." This quote really shows what the english were doing and thinking when they left, they were dreaming of a new day with better chances to purify the church and they made it happen. And also it says cast aside the other way which really represents that they want to throw out the way they were forced to live, and make a new and "better" way. So they burned the brides between them and England!

Thunder is about independence and freedom, which is exactly what the Pilgrims were looking for. The lyrics that prove my point are, "Not a yes sir, not a follower." They didn't want to follow the beliefs of the Church of England be cause they didn't agree or respect them, so they moved to the Americas. They wanted to start something they believed in and lead others. Wouldn’t it be even worse that once you go there, more than half of your new population died because of illness or severe cold? This was what it was like in Plymouth, MA. The song “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor connects to Plymouth perfectly. The line in this song “but then I spent so many nights thinkin’ how you did me wrong,” is an example of this connection. During the long winter, many Pilgrims died. The remaining colonists probably wanted to go back to England, where all was familiar, and they survival was easier. When they thought about how they had escaped religious persecution in England, and could practice their religion freely here, they would stop thinking of going back to England. Another line in the song is “I will survive”. This is easier to connect because during the winter that included many deaths, they had one thought - survive!

The Native Americans killed anyone who came out of the fence around the settlement which starved all of the pilgrims. The pilgrims needed a hero to save them from the Native Americans just like in Tyler's song when she sings "I need a hero. I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night. He's gotta be strong and he's gotta be fast. And he's gotta be fresh from the fight." Tyler's song relates directly to the Plymouth colony because they both needed a hero to save them because they couldn't do it themselves. Sadly many pilgrims died and when John Smith came back to Plymouth only sixty people were left.

Life was not easy for the Pilgrims when they came to Massachusetts, in fact 50% of the original pilgrims died during the first winter. Another line from this song is "Of the kindness of Jesus that draws me in". This song is very religious, and the Pilgrims were very religious strict Christians who wanted to separate from the Anglican church, they came to the New World for religious freedom, the ability to practice whatever religion they please. The overall theme of the song is religious freedom and believing in yourself, something that the Pilgrims had to do, but they persevered and survived even though they faced so many obstacles, and it shows that spring is just around the corner from a long winter.

The Plymouth colony was all about freeing themselves from the Church of England. They thought the Church had to many The song "Carry on Wayward Son" By the band Kansas is related to the goal freedom of religion and independence of Plymouth in many ways. It's a song about, as the title implies, carrying on and being free, and the downfall of someone who feels trapped, much like how the people were trapped into being Church of England. "Once I rose above the noise and confusion just to glimpse of behind this illusion, I was soaring ever higher..." This line relates to Plymouth by the people wanting to rise above the illusion and force of the Church of England, and seeing what could be ahead of them if they freed themselves. The final relation is of Plymouth people wanting to get away from the masquerade of the teaching of the Church of England, because they believe it to follow true to the Christian teachings. "Masquerading as a man with a reason, my charade is the event of the season..." this line shows how the Church of England is not where Plymouth wants to take their colony.

Original Video: https://youtu.be/2X_2IdybTV0

Lyrics: "Carry On Wayward Son" - Kansas https://youtu.be/o3T7-VbfYLU

The struggles they went through are really shown through the line of "Pushed as far as I can go." it portrays how hard the colonists had to push in order to finally settle their group in Plymouth and make sure their fellow colonists wouldn't reject their own religion or else they'd get thrown out. The struggle Plymouth went through is shown well throughout the whole song.

"Burn every magnet in spring, and barrel into the unknown", they are planning on leaving and going out into the unknown. It's good because it saying that some people will "win", like living in America, and having a good life there, and some will "lose", meaning that they can't move to America, and if they do they'll get sick and die. Also, "Some will Lose" can represent how the Native American's couldn't keep their land, and they eventually died out from the Europeans. "Some will win" can also represent how the Europeans won the land.

One reason is because it shows the relations about when the People from England were splitting from the Anglican Church. One quote to support this is " One heart Broken into Two" This shows from when the Pilgrims in England were one whole and then they separated from the Anglican church. So then the second part is broken into two hearts/ halves. This part represents when they split to two places. The theme is like when two things that are similar become different and start floating away from one another. It also represents starting over to make things better in their regards. It represents moving forward so they can continue their religion with out being hurt in a way. They left so they could carry on for their own, like continuing but also starting over to make things better. These are a few reasons why this song relates to Plymouth.

The song “ I am a C” relates to the pilgrims because, it is a children's song about christianity. The pilgrims were proud to leave England and go their own way for their religion, they were proud to be their type of christian. The song i am a c is a very upbeat song and is sang very proudly. The song goes “ i am a c, i am a c-h, i am a c-h-r-i-s-t-i-a-n” But one of the lines that relates to the pilgrims the most is the line “ And i have c-h-r-i-s-t in my h-e-a-r-t and i will l-i-v-e e-t-e-r-n-a-l-l-y” When the pilgrims made their journey they had to have faith and christ in their heart. Everything could go wrong during their journey and they took a huge risk. The pilgrims are the more religious ones of the two colonies ( Jamestown and MA) and the theme of this song is definitely based on religion.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YH_mhPX7C5k

Jason Zou - B block

This song was specifically chosen after an immense amount of research. I believe this song has a strong relationship with the theme of Plymouth / MA. The song portrays god and depression in the same lines. The singer's gruesome life is described in the song as to express the hardships he's had to experience and endure, which relate to the difficult lives that the Pilgrims also had to experience. Christianity plays a big role for the lives of the Pilgrims in their new life. Alternatively, as the music progresses, the artist refers to Jesus whom helps him stand up after everything he's gone through.
"Every time you run, every time you hide
Every time it hurts, every time you cry
Every time you run away, every time you hide your face
And it feels so far away, I'm right here, with you."
These lyrics indicate the artist's connection with Jesus whom had been by his side, as sung in the song "And it feels so far away, I'm right here, with you."
Similarly, christianity is a religion based off trusting and believing in Jesus, which is a strong belief of the Pilgrims. They relied on faith and hope to bring them back up from the difficulties they were facing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmVa8hmM0RY

Many Pilgrims who seeked religious freedom had to fight get it and had a heavy burden put on them. They had to travel a grueling two months to get to a land where they had the freedom they want. My song is I Can See Clearly Now by Johnny Nash. I think that this song represents the way the pilgrims felt after finally being free for the roman catholic church. At one point in the song Johnny Nash says “I think I can make it now, the pain is gone, All of the bad feelings have disappeared, Here is the rainbow I've been prayin' for.” This lyric represents the hardships of the pilgrims and the moment when they land in Massachusetts and the weight of freedom being lifted off their shoulders, And all of their prayers coming true.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1phe6Pe3djY
