Samurai came to power around the 12th century. They were the strongest and most feared units on the battlefield. The rose to power throught power and started the first shogunate. It was a military dictatorship where the leader was called the shogun. The ruled the land with the help of Daimyos- the feudal lords. Samurai were the servants and protectors of their lords. There were always power strugles between the Shogun and the Daimyos which was fought by samurai. Samurai folowed the " the way of the warrior" called Bushido. This code is still rooted deep in the japanese society. Samurai were the reanimation of honor, power and justice. The first big era for samurai was the Kamakura period. The samurai controlled the shogun and had all the power.Being a Samurai was the most prestigious position. You needed permision which you earned through military achivements. But in 13th century the Mongols invaded Japan and weakened the power of the country. That lead to Ashikaga shogunate. It was an era of endless combat between clans. Then Tokagawa Ieyasu unified Japan. It was an era of peace, so many samurai had to find other ways of living. Then the Shogun porhibited swords to only the samurai, which widened the diference in power. There were many rebelions from the side of Samurai, but we ineffective. Japan opened the borders for other counties, when the Satsuma and Choshu clans rebeled and took over japan. The Choshu clan banned all swords, and the last samurai rebeled. It was called the Satsuma rebelion, when the last of rebeling samurai took their swords and went against the Imperial forces wielding guns. That marked the end of Samurai era.
Timon Malnar

Language and writing of Japan

The Japanese language is not at all similar to Chinese, as many people are mistaken, but it does bear some resemblance to Korean. The writing system on the other hand is similar to Chinese (from whom it was borrowed) (specifically kanji) and also the Korean Hanja. Japan uses three alphabets, or rather two syllaberies and one logography. They are called Hiragana (ひらがな), Katakana (カタカナ) and Kanji (漢字). Hiragana is mostly used for suffixes and grammatical words, Katakana is primarily for loanwords and names and Kanji for the root words of a sentence. Hiragana and Katakana are syllaberies, which means, every symbol represents one syllable. In Japanese that mostly means one consonant followed by one vowel. It can also be just the vowel or in one case only one nasal consonant (ん/ン). Kanji is a logography which means, just like Chinese, that every symbol represents one word. Every Kanji Character has two different possible readings, depending of its country of origin (Japanese or a slightly modified version of the Chinese pronunciation). Chinese reading is mostly used if there are more Kanjis one after another. The Japanese vowel inventory consists of the quite standard a, i, u, e and o, with u being unrounded, and their consonant inventory consists of, k, s, t, n, h, m, y, r, w, g, dz, ts, b, p, and dzh. Hiragana and Katakana only represent somewhat half of the consonant phonetic inventory, the other is expressed using diacritics.
The characters ya, yu, yo and the vowel glyphs can also be used in a smaller version to modify the character before them. Japanese is usually read top to bottom and from right to left, but since the edition of computers, it has become the standard left to right and top to bottom. Although this is more practical, most books are still written the old way.
Žan from Slovenia

About 80% of Japan's 128 million live in Honshu City. As a society, they are linguistically, ethnically and culturally homogeneous; 98.5% of the population are Japanese, the rest are foreign workers from Korea, China, the Philippines and descendants of Japanese from Brazil, Peru and the USA. The dominant ethnic group are the people of Jamato, the more important minorities being the Ainu Islands and the Rjukju Island Peoples and the Burakumin Social Minority. On average, the Japanese population reaches the second highest expected age at birth (83.5 years for 2010-2015). The country is facing a demographic disaster, because there will be 4% of Japanese older than 65 yearas. So the population will drop from 126 milion to just 95 milion.
PROBLEMS:
With the aging of the population, there will apear social problems such as labor shortages and increased social expenditures on pensions and healthcare emerge. By 2050, the population is projected to fall to 95 million. Immigration and fertility initiatives are offered as solutions to disaster relief. Japan accepts only 9,500 new naturalization citizens each year, with only 18 refugees admitted in 2012. It also suffers from high suicide, which is the leading cause of death among people under the age of 30.
Andraž from Slovenia

Sushi is one of the first foods that spring to mind when we think about Japanese cousine. The word sushi refers to any dish made with Japanase rice that has been seasoned with rice vinegar. Another typical food is Udon. It is one of the main noodle varieties eaten in Japan. Udon noodles are thick and made from wheat flour and brine water. Udon can be served in a number of different ways. If you enjoy crispy fried food, then you will love Tempura. Tempura are pieces or slices of meat, fish or vegetables that have been covered in a special way. It is a tasty meal. All in all, Japanase food is very different that ours but that doesn't make it any less delicious.
Klara from Slovenia
