It is not a mystery that people want to speak a second language, but why is it often English?
For starters, English is in many places, so it is a simple association to think if people want to access information in these places or want to go to these places, they need to speak the language. This happens with music from English-speaking artists and movies normally made in English.
Of course, it is possible to translate, and this is easy to do that too with the internet. Some things can't translate, though. The excitement and the happiness of being independent in a second language give you a feeling of being somewhere else, listening to sounds, and participating in the cultural momentum where memory is happening. 
People learn English to interact with the English world and the people that engage in it every day.  Reading books could have a lot of reasons and good consequences: in the books we can learn things, we can have fun, improve our imagination, see the world from other points of views (sometimes a point of view that is impossible to see in real life like an animal's ), we can learn vocabulary and improve our critical sense; and for this and others reasons people read books.
