Provide an Example of a Social Network by James Cook

To generate a social network, you need to identify the kind of node is in the network and the relation in the network that defines what ties will be included. What are the nodes? What is the relation? Get to it and share your example network here!

The kind of node in the network is a person. The relation in the network is that we work together. Some may have the relation of friendship, but I am just going to focus on the one relationship of co-workers. I only chose to depict the relationships up to 5th Grade and only classroom teachers. If I were to add all personnel, I would have to switch to a matrix.
In my graph, the nodes are Linda, Lisa, Julie, Leah, Maria, Tiffany, Jen, Marissa, Susan, Tammy, Chris, Steven, and Thomas. I have ties between all the teachers K-3 with arrows. This is because this is a grade level team that works together, along with the principal for PLCs and curriculum. It’s not that they “don’t work” with the 3-5 teachers, but they don’t “work” directly alongside these teachers. The same goes for the nodes of Marissa, Susan, Tammy, Chris, Steven, and Thomas. They work as a grade leveled team, and meet regularly as well as switch students between subject matter and skills for RTI purposes. Linda, the principal, is in blue as she is the key node in this whole system of networking. She is responsible for overseeing the relationships and “ties” between each teacher and ensures that the ties remain positive. However, like any workplace, some of the ties between nodes are negative. There are moments of frustration with one another, etc. that make the communication and workload seem impossible. That’s when one of the nodes would respond back to Linda, the primary node, for assistance.

Betty is responsible for making sure all the ties are still there, and that the right people are communicating. She holds all the ties together because without her, the ties would not be complete.
I will admit that this assignment confused me, but once I made my social network and was visually able to identify where the ties were, it became a bit easier to understand.

There are many employees who work within the bank, and there are a number of higher ups in the chain leading to the CEO. It would be very difficult to show the connections between all of the banks employees so I stuck with who works within my branch. There are nodes in my graph which represent the branch manager, assistant manager, CSR, branch ops, teller1 and teller 2. There are ties between who reports to who. Starting at the top is the branch manager who everyone reports to. Under her is the assistant manager who everyone except the branch manager reports to. Then is the branch ops person and the CSR who have about equal authority and who the tellers can go to. And the tellers who can report to or have ties with everyone but each other.

In my family specifically, we contain my mother, father, brother, and sister-in-law, along with myself. We are the nodes within this social network. The ways in which we communicate between our network would be considered the ties between us. In this case, the ties would come to play through the use of cell phones. Though we all at some point interact individually, the main method of communication is from my mother. She is in touch with all of us, and communicate our news to the other members of the family.
From the chart below, you can see that Mom communicates to and from all members of the family. The ties between the rest of the family members are one-way, being that one may communicate regularly via cell phone to some, but it may not be reciprocated back to them.

I chose my basketball team for my social network example. In my diagram you can see that the nodes are all the members of the coaching staff and the team and the ties are the arrows which represent the group text messages. In the offseason we mostly communicate through group chats. You can see that the athletic director and the two coaches have two-way communication, and the coaches and the captains have two-way communication too. The captains and the other players have one-way communication in the group chats and the captains are the ones communicating. Normally the athletic director will pass on messages to the coaches and the coaches to the captains. From there the captains give the information to the team. The different relationships and status of the people in the program define whether the ties are one-way or two-ways. This is just for communication within the ties of text messaging not the multiple other forms of communication that take place. (The diagram may look better if you open it up)

Okay. After looking at these posts I realize that most of my classmates are way ahead of me as to knowing how to create graphs. :(
So for this post I will write about a social network which I believe affects education. In the past years I have observed the following: the social network in education that we have now is not working. First, the state decides what is to be taught in schools by dictating standards to a Superintendent, the Superintendent then dictates to the school Principals what needs to happen in their school to incorporate those standards. The Principals then direct their teachers to teach to meet those standards in their classrooms. The teachers then teach the students. Finally the students learn only what the teachers are told to teach them. As you can see the only direction in this example is one -way, so all arrows would point in one direction beginning with the State Education Board. (The education social network would be much more effective is all levels would actually communicate with each other in a constant and practical way creating many pathways for the education information to flow.) The nodes in my example are the basic positions in public education at the K-12 level. The ties are the actual information passed between the nodes, which sadly in this example, only flows in one direction. P.S. My goal right now is to learn how to use something on this computer to visually show graphs. Any suggestions? Should I already know how?
