In the novel Fahrenheit 451, Montag is very abusive to his wife Millie, verbally and physically. This is shown in the direct quote “He slapped her face, he grabbed her again and shook her” (Bradbury 63). Montag decided to take his anger out on Millie, to the point where he would choke his own wife because he didn’t want anyone finding out that he had been hiding books and storing them away. In the society throughout the novel, it is made very clear that if do anything to go against any rules, you can be murdered. Another example of when Guy was abusive to Mildred is when he said “Leave me alone!’ Montag felt himself turning in a great circling roar and buzz and hum” (Bradbury 94). Mildred was with Mrs. Phelps and Mrs. Bowles when Montag yelled at Millie for telling her friends that Montag had possessed a book. Montag was more mad, though, about the fact that Mrs. Bowles said she had hated poetry. Mildred later on had wanted Montag to read a poem so that Mrs. Phelps and Mrs. Bowles would see how books made no sense and were irrelevant and that we didn’t need them. This could symbolize voice because of the way that Montag yelled at Millie in front of all of her friends she had invited over. This shows how he really treated her and how he is very inconsiderate about how he should act in front of guests. He takes out his anger on other people and doesn’t realize how his actions or words can really affect someone. This could also show tone because when Montag yelled at Millie, he was using a very negative tone towards her, which could make her think that she had done something wrong and that it was her fault, even though it was not.

In this novel, there are many instances of murder and and murder being seen as a joke. One example of this is when the Hound was introduced and “The animals were turned loose. Three seconds later the game was done, the rat, cat, or chicken caught half across the areaway, gripped in gentling paws while a four-inch hollow steel needle plunged down from the proboscis of the Hound… The pawn was tossed in the incinerator. A new game began.” (Bradbury 22). Small animals were placed in front of the Hound, which would then murder these animals by stabbing them. The firefighters would use this as some form of entertainment when they would be waiting to get an alarm to go burn more books. This shows how the firefighters in Fahrenheit 451 are just focused on “doing their job”, and not about anything other than themselves. An example of murder of a human could be seen as a very minimal issue is when Montag told Millie “We burned a thousand books. We burned a woman.” (Bradbury 47). Montag was trying to explain to Millie what had happened earlier that day when the firefighters had murdered the woman who was trying to protect her books. Millie didn’t really seem to care, though, and was trying to change the subject. This could show how Millie was so used to hearing about murders in their town, especially that had involved the firefighters (Fahrenheit 451). Lastly, another example could be when Montag was murdered. The society had murdered an innocent man, which seems to be the overall problem of the resolution of the book. Montag wasn’t allowed to think “outside of the box”, and that is what ended up getting him killed. These could show foreshadowing and internal conflict. Foreshadowing is used when the Hound is first brought into the novel. The Hound will end up playing an immense role in the second half of the book. Internal conflict is shown when Montag struggles with telling Millie how he had killed a women, and how Millie didn’t have much interest in listening to him.

This is due to the fact that some people believe domestic violence should be brought more attention to, while others think it should be pushed to the side. In the 2019 football season, Redskins’ linebacker Reuben Foster was convicted with two domestic violence arrests. NFL, though, refused to suspend Foster, and Reuben stated “I am grateful to the Washington Redskins and NFL for giving me this second chance” (Finlay). Many famous individuals are given second chances often, while average men or women are not always given this option. America does provide domestic violence shelters where women can go if they are in danger at any time, but sometimes people can be turned down from these shelters (Thinking about). This can show how society today doesn’t always take situations like this as serious as they should, because when someone is abused, no matter how, they should always be welcomed a safe place to stay. Another domestic violence case that would change how many would view domestic violence in the U.S. is when Francine Hughes killed her abusive husband, and “Francine did not know it, but she was about to become a central figure in what is now known as the battered women’s movement, which worked to draw attention to the plight of women who were brutalized by their husbands—but were rarely taken seriously by America's justice system” (Francine). Hughes was a major part of the battered women’s movement that would mainly focus on stopping men from being allowed to abuse their wives throughout America and other countries (The Battered). Another crucial issue with domestic violence is murder. Murder by partners in a relationships are staggeringly increasing, mostly by gun violence. According to The NY Times, “The number of victims rose to 2,237 in 2017, a 19 percent increase from the 1,875 killed in 2014” (Laura). The government has tried to force laws upon America against domestic violence before, and has looked towards it, such as The International Violence Against Women Act, but never set any specific laws or acts (Domestic Violence Worldwide).

One murder case that has affected how many people look at murder is the case of O.J. Simpson. O.J. was accused of murdering his ex-wife, Nicole Simpson, and her companion Ronald Goldman. O.J. Simpson would be taken to trial, where he would first be found not guilty in 1995 and later concluded that he would “devote the rest of his life to find the murderer” of his ex-wife. (User) After later being put on trial again for robbery and kidnapping in 2007, O.J. would be sentenced to 10 years in prison, and was granted parole in 2017, but would still live a restricted, “free” life (What’s next). Another murder case of a Florida man who had murdered his wife because she had wanted to leave with her son, also shows how our society faces domestic violence throughout the use of murder. The 3 year old son had stated “Daddy hurt mommy. Daddy shot mommy. Daddy placed Mommy in timeout. My daddy could not wake her up” (Lucero). Statistics show that “1 out of 10 children had witnessed or observed a shooting or knifing by the age of six” (Facts). According to CBS News, “... the tally of U.S. homicides involving guns rose to nearly 11,000 last year, from about 9,600 the year before (CBS News). This can also relate to the graph in Picture #5, because the number of deaths within a state that don’t have many enforced gun laws is greater than states with stricter gun laws. Many researchers believe that the American culture could be seen as a “culture of death”. This means that the American culture does not certainly “enjoy” the act of murder, but some people cherish violence. Many people also think that if the “hitman” is accused of murder or manslaughter, that the person who “ordered the hit” should also face punishment (Jones). This makes no sense because the victim of the crime had no wrongdoing.
