The only people there are Darry, Soda, Randy and his parents, Cherry and her parents, and two of the other boys who attacked Pony and Johnny the night Bob was killed. During the hearing,  everyone got to tell their side about what happened the night that Johnny stabbed Bob, except him. The judge just asked about his home life. He then clears him of all charges. When Ponyboy returns home he isn't the same as he was before. He isn't doing well in class anymore. He's more forgetful and doesn't care anymore. Even his teachers are worried about his grades, especially his English teacher, because he use to make  A's and now he has a D-. So his teacher gave him a paper to write to boost his grade up to a passing level. So now, Darry and Pony fight even more about things Darry never had to get onto Pony about before. Pony is losing himself because Johnny and Dallas died. Darry's constant nagging only causes arguments. When Darry and Pony try to bring Soda into a fight and make him choose sides, he runs away from the house. Pony and Darry chase after him and when they get to him, Soda explains that he just can't stand always being in the middle, always having to pick one brother from the other. They had ever thought about how their fighting was affecting Soda. Soda reminds them that they should be sticking together, not tearing each other apart. They agree to stop the fighting and try to all one not two against one. After school, Ponyboy goes to the gocery store with Two-bit and steve. A car full of Socs pull up, but Pony does not feel anything at all. He is no longer scared anymore. Some Socs jump out of the car and accuse Ponyboy of killing Bob and threatens Pony. Ponyboy then breaks the glass bottle and holds it up to the Socs says "You get back into your car or you'll get split," scaring the Socs off. Then he picks up the broken glass to prevent any flat tires. Two-bit realized he really would have used that bottle before when they got into it with the Socs for hanging with their girls.  After the forgiving with Darry and Soda, Pony cannot get himself to do buckle down and find the theme of his paper. SO instead of working he pulls out Gone with the Wind and a note from Johnny falls out. Johnny wrote that he had thought about what the poem Nothing Gold Can Stay really meant. He thinks that one should not take anything for granted, that everyone needs to continue to look at the world as if it is brand new in order to appreciate it or as if it could be gone the next day. He also writes that Pony still has plenty of time to make something of himself. There is plenty of good in the world, and, most importantly, Pony should tell Dally these ideas as well.That Dally really needs to hear them. After the note from Johnny he realizes how it is too late to tell Dally and suddenly he acknowledges that there are a bunch of Dallys in the world. That someone should tell their side of the story, from their perspective, and then maybe other people wouldn't be so quick to judge. Pony decides that this is his theme topic. Ponyboy's teacher gives him a writing assignment to boost his grade up and prove to him that he is still a good student. The teacher tells him he write about whatever he would like to write. After the grocery store incident, he asks his teacher if it can be longer than 5 pages. After he gets permission, he begins to think about how to start the story, and decides to begin with "When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home..."
