What are Thoreau's thoughts on solitude?

Thoreau thinks that the idea of solitude is essential to the human life in furthering our connection with nature and outside life. It gives the person space to think clearly and thoroughly without any distractions. He says that he sometimes doesn't understand regular life at home, and being so crammed in one house among st others. He likes the idea of space and true solitude.

Discuss in your groups the concept of detachment that Thoreau supports.

Collectively we thought that he supported detachment because he wanted individuality from society so he could further his relationship with his inner self. We also know that he didn't like life in a household and he thought solitude was good for the soul. He doesn't want to depend on anyone, he wants to be a one man show.

He wants to be by himself. He thinks that being alone is much better than being surrounded by others. He thinks it is better for finding peace if you are alone. He says that others are afraid to try this because of there religious beliefs, but Thoreau says privacy is sometimes the key to peace and you don't always have to be in a religious setting to be religious.

He talks about the visitors he would receive at home versus the visitors he receives in the woods. At home he said people would leave him tea and there names on little pieces of paper next to some food they might of left. But in the woods he could tell who the visitor solely based on the things they left behind. He says a woman left him a ring carved of wood that she left for him. She had made it during the long walk through the woods. Then one time a man had came and left grass clippings, but he knew it was a man due to the cigar smell he left in the room.

thoreau is describing and narrating a walk he's taking in the forest, he describes it as cold, foggy and windy but serene at the same time and states that he feels like he's in harmony with nature and with himself, he narrates all the interactions he can see between animals he describes the animals as the "nature's watchmen". in this paragraph he's using very vivid imagery and sophisticated language to set the tone of the whole essay.
