Abia Akram is an activist for disability rights especially for females.

She is bringing to light the discrimination of people with disabilities.

Akram is making a change via being the founder of the National Forum of Women with Disabilities and has campaigned for the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Inclusive Development. She is also working to include disability in the UN 2030 Agenda and its sustainable development goals.

A. Akram has become the first ever Pakistani woman with disability to be nominated as the Coordinator for Commonwealth Young Disabled People’s Forum and Global Coordinator at Global Network of Emerging Women Leader, Disabled People’s International.

B. Born with physical disability into a middle-class family in Islamabad, she began her education at a centre for persons with disabilities and is currently pursuing her Masters in Gender Policy at University of Warwick on the British Chevening scholarship.

C. She is a harbinger of hope for people, especially women with disabilities in the country. “In a society where women with disabilities are mostly considered a liability, my achievements have proven that they (the women) can leave their mark in any field,” she said. As the first woman with a disability from Pakistan to get the Chevening Scholarship, it has given me a real confidence to work in the field. Abia has been instrumental in leading the disability youth and women’s movement in Pakistan, and the Asia-Pacific region more widely.

D. After the massive floods in Pakistan, Abia worked as Liaison and Capacity Building Advisor, supporting the mainstreaming of disability in the humanitarian responses of NGOs.

This social issue is important because Persons with disabilities should have the same rights as all people to non-discrimination, access, equality of opportunity, inclusion and full participation in society as they are people too and may have innovation and potential inside them to excel and make society a better place.

Disability rights are the basic human rights of people with disabilities, which include the right to be free from discrimination, have access to opportunities, and participate in society.

This impacts people with disabilities as they are being discriminated due to their physical or mental characteristics.

This matters because people with disabilites should be treated with upmost decency like a person without disabilites would.

People with disabilites are often overlooked as idiots or like aliens but in fact that is not the case as people are missing out on some innovation and transformations to society such as inventions or maybe even pioneering different things.
