Introduction

Tying together the five original photos I snapped explicitly for this assignment and the 

last 13 weeks of learning in our Sociological Perspective in Community Development course 

was a unique and critical way of looking at my community. All 5 photos are within 5 km of my 

home, and it is interesting to me now, looking at these photos, that I do so from a sociological 

way of thinking. Making the familiar strange (Osbourne, 2022)) by asking who, what, where, 

when, how, and why when wearing my sociologist hat.

This first semester of learning with my peers has been a privilege. I have made myself 

vulnerable by sharing my lived experience with this assignment, and I hope that the readers 

know more about me that they can relate to. The photos I took allowed me to reflect on my core 

values and beliefs. I hope this is evident to the readers. With these 5 photos, I identified my 

community and its strengths and struggles. It is interesting how social issues influence your day-

to-day life.
