         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Edward Thorndike and the Law of Effect</strong><br>-Key Researchers: Thorndike and Robert Woodworth<br>Purpose: To see if there was a line between the associated learning in humans, versus in animals, and how problem solving is approached by either side<br>-<strong>Procedure</strong><br>1. An animal would be placed in a very small and uncomfortable cage with one way out<br>2. Would have to preform a small task to get out<br>3. After they would get out they would be rewards and put back into the cage to see how long it would take the animal to repeat the task<br>4. Each time the animal got out the latency would decrease because the animal starts to respond to stimulus faster<br><strong>Results</strong>:<br>The animals were able to find out how to solve the problems set for them, which would be considered intelligent if humans were able to see it<br>-"Practice makes habits"- Law of Effects <br><strong>Was it ethical?</strong><br>Yes, benefited animal and human, the cat was not put into harms way but slight discomfort<br><br><strong>Skinner's Operant Conditioning<br>Researcher:<br>Purpose:</strong><br>do his own experiment on how rewards and reinforcements have effects on behavior<strong><br>Procedure:</strong><br>He would put a rat in a box and everytime the rat pulled the lever they would get food or water and for a pigeon they would have to peck to get the same response</div><div><strong>Results<br></strong>Skinner found that the events following the response had a greater impact on the reoccurrance of the action <strong><br>Was it ethical?</strong><br>Yes but they put rats and pigeons into boxes and despite being hungry for the experiment they weren't put into any serious harm.<strong><br>Garcia<br>Purpose:</strong> <br>control group- rats made sick but not given saccharin<br>experimental- rats given saccharin<br>independent- saccharin<br>dependent- how much saccharin they drink<br><strong>Procedure:</strong><br>The rats would be given saccharin and then 30 min later exposed to radiation, 3 days later they would record the sickness<br><strong>Results</strong>:<br>Once they were given the drink after being sick they would associate the drink with sickness even though they had the drink 30 min later<br><strong>Was it ethical?</strong><br>Difficult to decide if it was ethical- could be unethical because of sickening the rats or could be ethical because the rats were well fed and had water.<br><br><strong>Pavlov<br></strong>Russian physiologist <br><strong>Procedure<br></strong>Gave dogs a surgery so he could measure the amount of saliva from eating certain foods, then he played a song while they salvated and they then salvated on their own.<strong><br>Results:</strong><br>used several different visuals, sounds, and smell to see if the stimulus of salvating would generalize for the dogs<strong><br>Was it a ethical?<br></strong>yes and no, the dogs receive surgery but it was minor and the animals were well fed and given water<br><strong>Seligman</strong><br><strong>Purpose:</strong> <br>see the effect of controllable vs uncontrollable shot to later avoid shock<strong><br>Procedure: </strong>took 24 groups of dogs, escape group, no escape group, harness group<br>shocked at the same time but the escape group could escape and avoid the shock but the no escape group could not. took all the dogs the next day and there were shocks on both sides and didn't fight the shocks<strong><br>Results: </strong>The no escape dogs just took the shocks even though they could escape and the escape group preformed the task to stop the dogs<strong><br>Was it ethical? </strong><br>Unethical, no debriefing and was a painful study, there was no reason to harm them and there was no consent.<br><strong>Bandura<br></strong>Plus Sheila and Dorthia Ross<br><strong>Purpose:</strong> <br>To discover where adult models are reflected by children<br><strong>Procedure:</strong> <br>Two groups, one exposed to violence and the other non violence plus a third group exposed to nothing<br>after being exposed to the model they were giving a mild aggression arousal<br><strong>Results: <br></strong>In same sex aggression conditions girls were more verbally aggressive and boys were more physically aggressive<br><strong>Was it ethical?</strong>&nbsp;<br>The experiment did not leave in the same state that they came in and were not debriefed after the experiment and provided unhappiness to the children.</div>]]></description>
