Some Course Design Reminders

1. Know before the course starts when the major assessment points are, especially for the Individual Oral, and agree with other colleagues teaching the course (if there's more than one of you!) when moderation will take place, and what will be moderated
2. Ensure students have a detailed course map setting out what will be studied when and the kinds of assessments to be used
3. Spend some time at the start of the course establishing the best ways for students to develop a course portfolio based on personal reflections, notes made in and outside lessons, acquiring resources [such as pictures] that could be used to help develop spoken skills in advance of the oral, a glossary of important terms.
4. Review formats, rubrics, strategies for each assessment element well in advance and provide "walkthroughs"
5. Establish a shared online resources point for the class, including video clips, articles, podcasts and other resources based on a structured inventory built around the course themes
6. Establish through discussion early on the first literary text and aim to cover this within the first term; start to consider the choice of the second text in the light of this towards the end of studying the text.
7. Build in regular course review components for students so that, in writing and verbally, they can comment on what they are finding challenging/helpful.

1. For choosing literature texts, it is easier if you know the group in advance (Interests, language capabilities etc.) when you choose the texts, however sometimes this is impossible. My advice would be to work with the first text in year 2, to see how students respond, before finalising the choice of a second text. I also think that it is important to ensure that the two texts differ in terms of: course themes; socio-cultural context and 'voice'; genre.
2. I think that using existing reading & listening texts, which have a wide range of robust LangB-style questions (On IB website/in-thinking/text-book etc.) is very helpful, but needs to be supplemented with more current materials so that the content feels more relevant to the students and this will engage them more.
3. In terms of making meaningful links to CAS and TOK, it would be helpful to speak to the experts at your school (CAS coordinator and TOK teachers) as they would probably have suggestions about how to tie it into your course outline.
4. Some students could do really well in a Language B extended essay, so it would be a good idea to present the options they have for LangB essays, by looking at previous essays as well as airing some suggested areas for research. Spending at least one class brainstorming ideas related to the EE guidelines and their course studies would help them to make informed choices.

5. Familiarise with Language B guide, take notes and make an outline before teaching to see the bigger picture and include all elements and themes
6. When teaching or planning, always refer to the guide and support material
7. Allow for students to draw on their experiences when delivering the course
8. Expose students to a variety of text types in relation to the Themes and Topics
9. Early introduction of assessment criteria so students are aware of what is expected of them
10. When planning lessons and delivering, target thinking, research, communication, social and self-management skills
11. Allow CAS opportunities to build up intercultural understanding in a real-life context
12. Use formative assessment to adjust your teaching
21. Promote learning about the target culture globally and not in one country
22. Identify students’ interest and design activities that can engage them
23. Learner profiles to be integrated in lesson plans
24.

8. I'd say it's important to every once in a while (especially in the beginning) go throught the IB learner profile so students understand what attitudes are expected from them (students might tend to be a little imature and they must understand they need to have more autonomy, take action, be responsible).
9. transparency is key: always tell students what's expected of them in assessments, so show them the assessment criteria and give relevant feedback.
-10. to better integrate TOK, CAS and extended essay, talk to the teacher and coordinators responsible for these contents so you can exchange ideas and get familiar with content and activities.
11. get familiar with the Language B guide, materials in the IB website and if you can, exchange ideas with other IB teachers.
12. Use current topics to engage students
13. develop projects in which they can interact with the rest of the school community
14. always go back to these key words to offer variety and develop different skills: individual, pair, group work; receptive, productive and interactive skills; audience, purpose, meaning and context; thinking, reasearch, communication, social and self-management skills.
15. vary text types, accents, target culture.
