Assistive technology approaches/tools (Keep in mind this is different than INSTRUCTIONAL technology)

For most students with Other Health Impairment, the majority of these students can access and benefit from the same technological supports that are used with their normally developing peers. Students with AD/HD need tools that help keeping them organized and low tech devices such as notebooks and dividers can be utilized to record and organize assigned homework and classroom tasks. Students with ADHD also like to move around and not sit in there seat, so having activities that involves movement would be helpful. Many students who are have OHI tend to need a little more help or have ADHD. If a student has a chronic condition, the doctor will send the school a note about if restrictions are in place. Even students who have ADHD or asthma or really any chronic condition, many of them learn just the same as their classmates.

Classroom strategies to accommodate students in grades 6-8.

1. Provide a caring and nurturing classroom environment, make sure to treat the individual first rather than the disability which should be treated second.
2. Use visuals
3.Permission to use the bathroom and drinking fountain when necessary. Allowing students to take bathroom breaks and no questions asked by the teacher. I actually had to deal with this throughout college, I would always constantly have to get up and use the bathroom due to my illness and I guess reading more about this I would probably classify under this category.
4. Promote cooperative learning (groups). This will help students work together and collaborate there ideas to keep them engaged.
5. Send work home (to prevent students from falling behind when they miss school for reasons out of their control). Allowing students to view what they missed in class. I think it is important for when a student misses a class to be able to have the accessibility to get the materials and notes covered in class. When I missed classes due to hospital visits most of my teachers didn't even email me back what I had missed. It's a shame for a student with a chronic illness to miss information and this is why I like this disability act to protect these students and allow them to still keep up with school.

Possible causes

The possible causes of why a student would be placed into OHI category is because many people face fatigue, muscle weakness, mobility issues, issues involving attention and more. I believe students who are placed into this category can do fine in the classroom with less assistance than most they just have a chronic health condition that holds them back but will receive additional resources to help them. Parents tend to overreact when they hear there child is placed into the OHI category but many students are and just need the little extra assistance to succeed.

A thorough description of the disability category summarized from professional sources (along with your paraphrased description be sure to include the IDEA definition and IDEA category)

The Idea definition to Other Health impairments is in category 9 and "According to IDEA, an Other Health Impairment is defined as:
Other health impairment means having limited strength, vitality or alertness, including a heightened alertness to environmental stimuli, that results in limited alertness with respect to the educational environment, that:

(i) is due to chronic or acute health problems such as asthma, attention deficit disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, diabetes, epilepsy, a heart condition, hemophilia, lead poisoning, leukemia, nephritis, rheumatic fever, and sickle cell anemia; and
(ii) adversely affects a child's educational performance "

This simply means students who don't classify as a learning disability but more of a medical disability. If a student isn't well enough to be at school or perhaps complete an activity they would be considered apart of the OHI category. An example would be a student with asthma who may have a hard time moving around because they get easily tired and muscle fatigue or even ADHD which is medically diagnosed. As teachers we will have many students who have ADHD as its very common so understanding different techniques to help them would be beneficial. Most Other Health Impairments tend to be chronic conditions. Usually if a student who needs a little more help in school but doesn't quite fit in other categories of learning disabilities will be considered as OHI.
