The year I got my first radio, I plugged it into the corner of the playroom and danced the days away to the Top 40 hits, including "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing." A lot of disco there. Name the year 1977, and I'll say, the year I got a radio--something transformative.

My freshman year of high school, and I remember watching the movie with friends. The whole "Flashdance" soundtrack was on the radio, and girls in leg-warmers tried to dance like that. I could have also pulled Madonna here, or Cyndi Lauper--I did wear neon.

This whole album reminds me of Terry, probably the lone guy in the school who liked Prince and would play it all the time in his car. He was just a little different from small town Ohio. A group of us ended up watching "Purple Rain" at after prom.

My 2 favorite bands in college were U2 and R.E.M., and sometime in there, I decided to learn all the words to this song as a personal challenge. If you ask me now, I'll still probably say they are my favorite bands. A little shaky on the words though.

Coming out of college, my first teaching position was at Lima Central Catholic High School in Lima, OH; and in those days, my music options were limited to what played on the radio. At first I cringed at country music, but then it grew on me.

This is a song I HATED! But I remember people doing it at Yankees games, and it figures that my sister Maribeth and I both got married that summer, so of course people wanted to do that dance at the dance receptions. I cringed every time! Ugh! Get the song out of my head!

Senior year of high school, two guards, Kendra and I used to play this song before our basketball games--a reminder to play in control, to execute, to do what we came there to do. Our coach was pretty tough on us sometimes, but through music, we got through it.

You know how a song can get overplayed so much that you don't enjoy it anymore? That's definitely this one, but every once in a while, my friends and I will recall an October weekend in Hocking Hills. We rented a cabin and just had a ball, including a night of karaoke and my leading the group in "Happy." Glad there's no video.
