I went to 8th grade in 1978 so there was none of the technology of today in our classroom. Technology for us was pencil and paper. We were not even allowed to use a calculator.

What do you think is the same?

The basic subject are still the same, maths, science, geography, history, languages and so on. These are the things that you need to learn about our society and the world we live in.

Did you have homework?

Yes, I had one to two hours every night.

Were extracurricular activities common?

Not like today.

I have seen that the fundamentals of education at our age have not changed. The basic things that we have to learn and have knowledge of are the same. This things are for example maths, languages, geography and so on. They also had homework like us. What has really changed is the way that this knowledge has been showed to kids. The technology has evolved a lot, none of the new technology from today was used, everything was on paper and with pencils. An other thing that is also different now is the hours of class, before, in Canada, the lunch break was shorter than now and people got home earlier.

The final conclusion that I have taken is that the important facts of education are not the things that we use to learn (the technology), but they are the important fundamentals that the show us.

There are lots of differences between the American education in 1950 and now.

Sixty years ago, the average teacher salary was much lower than now. In 1950, not even half of the population graduated High School, and nowadays, almost one hundred percent of the americans graduate, which means that now more people go to school and study. One of the most important changes is the technology used in class. The objects that we use now are, obviously, more advanced an evolved, for example, we have tablets, digital blackboards, laptops… So, the final conclusion can be that education is evolving a lot and people are taking more seriously the importance of studying.
