1. Why and how do we study literature? Why do we study TTTC?
We study TTTC because of the different methods of expressing perspective. The novel explores the conflicts that arise because of the war and O'Brien makes it a point to convey the trauma and emotional baggage that accompanies war through different stories or vignettes.

2. How are we affected by literary texts in various ways? How are we impacted by TTTC?
We are affected by literary texts by the way they tell their stories. O'Brien explores the idea of story truth and truth truth. Story truth comes from the first-hand experience of someone. When they describe something it may not be completely true but the way it made them feel is entirely true. If they want to pass a message or certain emotions to an audience, then the only way to provoke the same emotions as the storyteller is to tell it in a way that might be exaggerated or different than the actual event.

3. How does the structure and style of TTTC affect its meaning?
In TTTC, the novel does not have a specific flow of a narrative. Instead, it consists of different events or vignettes. So while the storyline may seem scattered, each vignette conveys a strong concept.

Cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text is important because knowing where the author is coming from gives a deeper understanding of their emotions and their outlook towards the topic of what they are writing about. It can help the reader connect to the author and take in their word choices and apply it to the topic. Knowing the hardships and background of segregation and black oppression helps readers share the same feelings as Hughes in his poems.

Literary texts offer insight into another culture when the author expresses their thoughts and feeling and ways of life

I was successful because I was able to use textual evidence to connect to other poems and reveal what the author was implying throughout his text.

Notes
Ideas discussed in Harkness I want to remember:

“Negro Speaks of Rivers”

With time rivers have been made constant similarly to the way oppression has been present throughout history.

Societal progression

Starting with “dawns of young” and ending with “sunset” represents the end of an era and a new time.

“My soul has grown deep like the rivers” indicated how he feels a connection to the oppression

“The Colored Soldier”

They thought they were fighting for their own freedom but many peoples views did not change no matter how much it was fought for

Allusion to black American soldiers fighting in WW1 shows how many people were manipulated

Poem is aimed as a narrative to show that soldiers were enraged that they were lied to

Cycle of black american’s hopes but going back to the cycle of betrayal

“Union barred us” shows irony because union comes from the word “unity” - demonstrates false hope and betrayal

Linda Krumholz claims (in "The Ghosts of Slavery: Historical Recovery in Toni Morrison’s Beloved") that finding a voice for the thoughts and experiences of women is central to the "healing," historical recovery theme and structure of the book. According to Krumholz, Morrison’s novel "adapts techniques from modernist novels, such as the fragmentation of the plot and shifting narrative voice, to compel the reader to actively construct an interpretive framework" (109). How does the novel specifically address issues of gender, writing and power? Persepolis is a "literary" text even though it is just a graphic novel because of the many authorial choices that Satrapi utilizes in order to convey insightful and deeper messages throughout the panels.

Time and Space
What insight did Persepolis give you into Iranian life during and after the revolution?

Persepolis showed me the constant political unrest. Along with pressure from the regime, Satrapi exhibits the internal conflict that Marji struggled with while growing up.

As Satrapi is able to depict events outside the bounds of Marji’s lived experience such as the forms of torture that the political prisoners experienced, the lack of borders represent the opening of ideas and the widening of knowledge that Marji did not have before hand. Throughout the novel Marji struggles with her balance of her views and ideals about herself and the revolution and she is often influenced by external sources such as her parents and these second-level narrators. The abrupt realization of the cruel actions told by Siamak and Moshen create a significant shift in Marji’s views and outlook of the revolution. The information that she gains as she grows up constantly shapes and reconstructs her political and cultural ideals that shatter the views of what her younger self thought to be true.

Satrapi exhibits the conflict within one's self, attempting to grow into herself and her morals and ideologies while being influenced by numerous factors. This connects to the other works specifically Beloved, TTTC, and COADF because all works include internal conflict within the characters.

Persepolis connects to our world today because Marji battled with her morals, religion, and family in order to develop into the person that she is. This is very prevalent in the modern day because of the constant ideologies and political issues that still arise. Many have difficulty aligning their morals with other ideas, and many children and even young adults struggle to find themselves and their morals.

How are we affected by Delbo's memoir and her imperative for us to "Try to look. Try to see"? How were you affected by Days and Memory?

Delbo places emphasis on the word try because as readers, trying to understand the horrors and suffering inflicted on many from the Holocaust. Not only did it affect individual people like Delbo but humanity as a whole. All readers can do is try to see what Delbo conveys in her writing because the pain is unimaginable.

D&M connects to the other works today because Delbo uses the theme of trauma throughout all her writing using the event of the Holocaust. Other works like Beloved also relate to the trauma aspect when the characters like Sethe and Paul D deal with their trauma from slavery. Morrison also uses the idea of memory and how it takes a greater presence in the lives of those who have suffered. Many of the works provide memory or guilt with a haunting aspect that follows the characters relentlessly.

How does D&M connect to our world today?

Because the Holocaust really happened, it has made its mark on humanity and will be known as one of its darkest times in history. Many people dealt with the aftermath of trauma and memory and stories have been passed down either through family or through the way Delbo writes her experiences and shares them with the world.

What motifs/themes does Duffy explore that you find interesting?

Motherhood - she demonstrates the motif of motherhood specifically through "Whoever She Was" and "Before You Were Mine" because she highlights the different aspects of being a mother and how it affects ones life to have children and raise them

Growing up/Time - she demonstrates the motif of the movement of time and the act of growing up through poems like "In Mrs. Tilscher's Class" because of the way that the perspective is of a young girl who discovers life outside of her sheltered classroom and becomes curious of the aspects of life around her. It is also shown through "Moments of Grace" because Duffy highlights the aspect of looking back on life, specifically love and how it affected her.
