When he tries to reach into his pocket for even finding crumbs, a telescreen yells at him, showing that there is absolutely no privacy. He is called by a number instead of his name, which shows he is losing his identity. This scene shows how the Party uses fear, hunger, and surveillance to completely control people and take away their freedom.

I selected this extract because it shows a powerful moment since it shows when Winston is completely at the mercy of the Party. He is alone, hungry, and also is very confused , and he is constantly being watched. This scene clearly shows how the Party uses both physical control (hunger, pain, isolation) and psychological control (confusion, fear, constant surveillance) to break into winston and other people spirit. It also shows how the Party takes away Winston’s freedom, identity, and even his ability to think or act for himself.

This analysis connects to the themes of 1984, such as totalitarian control, loss of identity , and surveillance. The telescreens watching him from every wall represent the Party’s goal of watching and controlling not only people’s actions but also their thoughts. Winston’s fear of moving and his desperation for food show how the Party uses suffering to make people weak and obedient.
