Today we learned how students learn English and teachers should teach English. As a English learner we should produce English. It means we should write or speak. And when we speak English, we feel scared, embarrassed or bad emotion. So teachers should tell students not to scare mistakes. Mistakes are important. Next, we should use language. Not practice language. In other words, students should solve a problem using English. Just practicing is not effective way to learn English. And to motivate students, teachers should set easy and exciting tasks. Game is one of the good example of this. Lastly, we should learn or teach English with someone. Studying alone is good, but speaking with someone is more effective way.

This video is about a man who married one woman. In 1998, he and his wife thought that they should divorce. They lived in California and in California, a husband and his wife had to live separated for an year before divorce. So he traveled to think more about himself as a gay. While this travel, he put a rainbow stripe sticker on the back of his car. Sometimes, people gave him a honk or nod as they see that sticker. It means "You're not alone. You're in the same community with us." That encouraged him to tell that he is a gay to his family, friend and his wife. He and his wife talked about their future, and decided to live separated to be happy. Now he married a man and he was able to be happy. Lastly, he thinks telling about ourselves to people is difficult or it seems it has a high hurdle. But maybe it is not high hurdle as you think.

Today, we learned about LGBTQ+ people. This is the one that I wanted to know about in this program. So today’s lesson was interesting. Firstly, we looked the gender unicorn. By using it, we can figure what we are. And we also watched a video about LGBTQ+. In this video one gay boy struggled to a society. He noticed that LGBTQ+ people are bullied in schools. So he decided to make a community to help LGBTQ+ people. Once it was denied by principal. But he could find an ally. An ally gave him a classroom to make community. So he succeeded to build a community. Lastly, we discussed about LGBTQ+. I learned that in the US, it is super common that there are so many kinds of LGBTQ+ people. But in Japan, we don’t know people like that. I think this comes from Japanese character. However they do exist in Japan too. So we need to be careful about it. Not to hurt them(although I didn’t mean to do so) we should learn about LGBTQ+.

Two things I learned from Vanessa

Vanessa told us so many about her movement. One thing is about what she is doing in her organization. She said she and her co-workers make communities which help people who are not majority like black people and LGBTQ+ people. This movement is so important for them because people like that feel not good if they don't belong to any community. So Vanessa and her organization give community to connect people. And secondly, she advised us how to achieve as a teacher. As a teacher, to help minority people, we have to know each other. But, minority and young people don't want to speak first. So, as a teacher, we should expose ourselves first. It will encourage students to speak themselves and know each other.

Today we did mainly two things. One is listening to Vanessa about her movement. And secondly we discussed with Tomoko, Erina and students. First, Vanessa’s story is about helping minority people like LGBTQ people. It was so interesting. She makes communities to help them. Minority people feel not good if there is no community of them. So, to encourage them, she does movement to create a community. Also, she advised us. As a teacher, we should meet a student individually. I think it is important to support them. They don’t want to talk about themselves, so teachers have to make trust from them. This was the thing that I was mots interested in from Vanessa’s story. And secondly, we talked with Tomoko and Erina. They lived in Japan 18 or 20 years ago. From them, we could learn some differences between Japan and America about racism, LGBTQ people and culture. The most interesting thing that I heard from them is about racism. It is sure that not many people in America hate people who is not white. But I had an image that any place include people like that (I know the number of people like thai is not so much). But they taught me not all of the area in America have discriminations. Recently Black lives matter movement is so hot, but the fact is that we don’t have to worry to much about it. This made me comfortable, and I became to want to go to America more!

Today, we learned about LGBTQ+ from Maggie. Her presentation is mainly about gender. I could know new words and some words more deeply. I was especially interested in Aromantic, Pansexual and Demiromantic. Aromantic is person who isn’t drawn to people romantically. And Pansexual is person who is attracted to all gender. Lastly Demisexual is person who is attracted to emotional connection. And more interesting thing for me was about LGBTQ+’s flag. We looked some flags. One is for lesbians, and the other one is for gays, and the other is for bisexual. I didn’t know the meaning of the rainbow. Today Maggie taught us the meaning of each colors. This was so interesting. And, after listening to Maggie, we talked with students in EWU Pride Center. At this point, I asked one question “Did you see the person who is ally?” And one of them told us about the story about rainbow cake. After telling she is LGBTQ+ person, her grandmother made her a rainbow cake. This story was so heart-warming. And I could know that rainbow means so important for LGBTQ+ people.

It was “Some people don’t want women to be a president. In our country, Japan, we haven’t seen a female president. But now, in Tokyo, we have a female mayor named Yuriko Koike. So I think way of thinking is changing. This is good I think because my opinion is that if person have abilities to lead people, he, she or they should be a leader regardless of the person’s gender. Secondly, we learned about Native American. Especially Native Americans live in Plateau. I was surprised that in Plateau, temperature go up to over 100 degrees in summer, and in winter, it goes down to under 0 degrees. This was so surprising to me. They struggled to live I read in the web site. This was so exciting work.

So, after reading task, we watched a video that interviewed Native Americans in a festival. In this video, we learned the cultures of Native Americans. In this discussion, we watched another video. In this video, one woman said that Native Americans went thorough the bad history. They were discriminated and raped, even killed.

In this section, we did mainly two things. First is talking with BJ Robinson. And the other is reading and watching task about Hispanic. Talking with BJ Robinson was so interesting. He is a teacher of arts and music at the same time, he is a music director. And I asked him a question, “Do you have any specific experiences as music and art teacher?” He answered and told us that experience. The most important thing is that we have to communicate each other. We have to explore our thinking. To understand each other, we have to continue to contact. It was interesting. And then, we read an article and watched a video about Hispanic. And we read a lesson plan. This was also exciting task. In the lesson plan, there was a question. It was “Who is American?” This was so interesting question for me. In the history of America, there were Native Americans. But later, Europeans came to America. Then I learned that Dominicans came to find work. And now, so many Asian people, African people and people from the other area are in America. So, answering this question is so difficult and important. But we have to think to understand each other I believe.

In this web site, many individual people answer the question, "What is America?" I think this is similar to "Who is America?" Reading some answers, I came up with an idea. I think everyone can be an American. Of course, in America, there are so many races. But, we cannot say that they are not American because their ancestors are from Europe. It is not true. I think America includes so many races, so accepting other race people is important.

In today’s section, we had a presentation by Dr. Nydia Martinez. Her presentation was about Latin Hispanic. Before today’s section, a knowledge about Hispanic that I had was only that they are the people who are connected to Spain. But I caught many information about them. I was interested in the effect of Hispanic culture to the culture of the U.S. In the U.S, there are more Mexican restaurant than the other restaurant even more than Mac Donald’s. And, moreover, in the area of language, Spanish is the second most common language in the U.S. Like this, Hispanic culture affects largely in America. This is because the Hispanics’ fast increasing of the population Dr. Nydia mentioned. And, we watched the live streaming on YouTube about “The Bluest Eye” written by Toni Morrison. This was so difficult for me. But after that we also watched the movie. In this movie, Toni Morrison was interviewed. I’m not sure whether I could catch the meaning correctly, but I was impressed. She said that recently, in some books, black women were the center of the stories. But they didn’t focus on the black girl. So she decided to put one black girl into the center of her book. Morrison wanted her to be surrounded by people. This was the motivation to write her book she said in the video. I was impressed by her words.
