3. When Hurston states, "Slavery is the price I paid for civilization." I believe she is saying that Everyone has to go through struggles in life, but that some were harder than others. I also notice that she uses the work I, when it was actually her relatives that had endured slavery, while she had to listen to people constantly teasing her about it. In the end, the struggle of slavery that so many, including her, had to go through, lead to a better life for the Negros, to the point of them living normal lives. Overall, I believe that the lines theme can be summed up with Identity. After all, she, and many other African Americans, had to go through very long and rough times to get where they all ended up.

3. What does Hurston mean when she says "slavery is the price for civilization?" The colored had to become slaves to the white man, they had to suffer just to call themselves a citizen. This perception allowed many to believe that the colored had no place as if they were less than dirt.
4.When Hurston says she is not "tragically colored" this makes her look at her own identity. She was never ashamed of her heritage she was a proud woman.

By saying " Slavery is the price I paid for civilization" she means that slavery was something they had to go through to be treated like people this relates to identity because it's who she is and what has happened.
4. This relates to self conflict by that she is fighting with herself because she is different.

By stating "Slavery is the price i paid for civilization" Hurston accepts her roots and past becoming what she is now her roots are what links to her identity because slavery was something they had to go through to be treated like normal people, to be equal.

4.)
