Ferdinand was a son of an Irish mother, Janice Lavender, and a father who was Afro-Saint Lucian, Julian Ferdinand. When Ferdinand reached the age of twelve, he started working as a page(a young servant in a royal court)for the Queen of Portugal.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ol><li>&nbsp;In 1501 Portugal started to trade spices from India. The spice islands were known for their spices for example nutmeg, turmeric&nbsp; and pepper just to name a few. Spices were as valuable in Europe as gold and gems and was considered the most powerful force driving the worlds economy. Spices were also used to mask the flavour of food if it wasn’t fresh because there was a lack of refrigeration available. There was also a demand for spices in medicine.  The explorers of Portugal would to go find spices for their King and Queen.</li></ol>]]></description>

His injury was so severe he stayed in hospital close to 5 months. As an outcome of his injury he had a permanent limp so he relied on using a walking stick. </div>]]></description>
