German anatomist Dr Gunther von Hagens has become internationally known for his ability to turn real human bodies into statues. He does this through a technique which he invented and which he calls ‘plastination’. The procedure involves injecting liquid plastic solution into the dead body of a volunteer, the solution then hardens preserving the cadavers entirely. Whilst Von Hagens originally intended his plastinated bodies to be used for the study of anatomy only, but over the years his ‘sculptures’ have become increasingly artistic.
- Nicole

If the events of the past are open to interpretation, then what is the purpose of History?
The purpose of history is to get as close to an objective understanding of the past. This understanding can and should be used to guide us and to avoid past mistakes. We should not try and find a version of history that we like or that would help prove a point because that isn’t really useful in the long term. If we paid attention to the effect pollution from factories had and didn’t ignore it or change it to support the idea that it doesn’t cause harm maybe we wouldn’t have so much pollution or people or don’t believe in global warming.

Is it possible for historical writing to be free from interpretation?
It is possible for historical writing to be free from interpretation but it is difficult. One would have to remove emotional language and include factual statistics for everything. You wouldn’t be able to something was a cause because you would be interpreting the motivations of people. Overall it would probably be confusing, overwhelming and quite boring to read.

If the events of the past are open to interpretation, then what is the purpose of History?
History is a study of the human past, so the reasons we study it will be based on how we want to benefit from history, which is to learn about our mistakes and how to improve on it.

Is it possible for historical writing to be free from interpretation?
We can interpret historical events and draw conclusions from it, sow e can correct mistakes made in the past, which is why it's not possible for historical writing to be free from interpretation. We rely on the interpretation of historical writing to record events. How a writer sees an event will be how a piece of historical work will be written

If the events of the past are open to interpretation, then what is the purpose of History?
- One thing about history is that you can gain 'facts' like dates, significant events. In todays world, they are important because things like memorials for significant events allow people to stay emotionally connected to the past --> this is important because it could remind populations when something went wrong, not to repeat it, or if something went right, to remind them o the power they have.
- If history can be interpreted, then looking at different interpretations important understanding into different perspectives of something, which increases the knowledge gleaned from a source - though multiple interpretations should be considered.

Is it possible for historical writing to be free from interpretation?
- Possibly, things like the recording of the date of something is pretty objective. If the date of something matches up with other accounts then one can assume it is accurate. Things like describing an actual event is harder to be free from interpretation - hence why historians need to use a range of sources and not give opinions (unless they ARE trying to convey only one perspective)

If the events of the past are open to interpretation, then what is the purpose of History?
I think the purpose of History is just for people to get a glimpse of what happened in the past. They might not agree with it sequence of events for example, but if they have a rough idea of what went on, they have a baseline knowledge of it and then they are free to just interpret the events. So the purpose of History, I think is just a start off point so everyone is exposed to the same information and it is up to them whether they want to believe or not.

Is it possible for historical writing to be free from interpretation?
I think to some extent, it is not possible for historical writing to be free from interpretation as different people will always have different perspectives about the events, so in a way the historical writing would be from their interpretation as it is their recall of what had happened. So it is possible for the historical writing to not be ‘bias’ but it is not really possible to be free from interpretation.

If the events of the past are open to interpretation, then what is the purpose of History?
Events of the past are open to interpretation, which can cause clashing historical accounts. Nevertheless, it is important for us to have an understanding of the past, even in its most subjective form, in order to be able to inform our choices in the present and make predictions for the future.

Is it possible for historical writing to be free from interpretation?
No, it isn’t possible for historical writing to be free from interpretation. History is thrice removed from the past, meaning that there is interpretation each time that the historical account is transferred into a new medium. Not only that, but witnesses themselves can’t be relied on to present a 100% factual and accurate account. This is because, from the moment that an event becomes a memory, that memory begins to change and our brains fill in the gaps for small details that we no longer remember, meaning that any historical account isn’t made up of only factual information.

If the events of the past are open to interpretation, then what is the purpose of History?
Purpose of history is for us to understand the past, and how it has repeated throughout humanity, therefore allowing us to see what mistakes and greatness people have done, and how we have came to be, even possibly, how we can change the course of humanity in the future.

Is it possible for historical writing to be free from interpretation?
No, by first hand witness the event is already biased, as the person witnessing it interprets the situation differently from others, then a historian reading it would interpret the encounter differently as well. To be entirely free from interpretation, it's better off that one does not know the event exists at all.

If the events of the past are open to interpretation, then what is the purpose of History?
History is dictated by the winners of the battle and therefore means it is not accurate. However, this is true for anything and most if not all information has some form of bias which should be accounted for. To get around this you must look at every different source and evaluate what truly happened however there is no way that someone can be completely certain that any history is true history.

Is it possible for historical writing to be free from interpretation?
As I said above, I believe that there is most likely no way that any historical writing can be free from interpretation. Even if the historian is writing with true intentions there will probably be some key events that he/she has missed and therefore not portraying the true story.

If the events of the past are open to interpretation, then what is the purpose of History?
It’s to see the different viewpoints that people had on the situation, and how that could be used to see how they reacted to a certain event. The reaction, of course, is up for interpretation, and the account as well. It shows a personal view of the past issue. The purpose of this would be that the take the ‘relevant’ perspectives and use it to see what the past was like.

Is it possible for historical writing to be free from interpretation?
For historical writing, it can't be free from interpretation; just really close. Even the dates of certain events can be up from interpretation. Asking when the start or the end of an event depends on the person and their perception. Maybe they got the date from a newspaper they read, but that would be a second hand account from a first hand account.

For it to be free of interpretation, it might be best to state what their alignments were. This means that their views won't be up for interpretation, as there would always be the doubt of national pride or smth similar to that

If the events of the past are open to interpretation, then what is the purpose of History?
I think that the purpose of history is to recall and recount facts/information/events as objectively as possible so that in this way it would be useful to us in the present. Not for the purpose of making it useful for us, because in this purpose it is too vague? Because in what way can it be useful for us, to perceive the past as a time where we were underdeveloped and weak growth, innovation? Or to look at it as when the environment was thriving and before humans are slowly destroying it? Because if we thought of it when we were underdeveloped, does this mean that now we are thriving? Or now we are destroying the environment. I think currently history is the third point mentioned, the idea of multiple perspectives and that we have to choice to choose which one we want to believe in.

Is it possible for historical writing to be free from interpretation?
Before I didn’t think so, but now I believe so. Because of the all reasons that was mentioned in the presentation. The idea that there is perspective when you select what pieces of information of evidence historians analyse to what photos are taken during an historical event. Then recounting of events could also be heavily emotional or vague.
